Year 10 Boys Hull Schools Cup Final
Sirius Academy West 18 Malet Lambert 36
After a fantastic performance against South Holderness a few weeks ago in the Semi Final of the Hull Schools Cup, the reward was to play Malet Lambert in the final at the Hull FC Training Facility at County Road. Malet Lambet have a very good Year 10 team who already reached the final of the Yorkshire Cup and the Semi Final of the National Cup this year, so the boys knew they would be up against it, especially without key player Sam Macauley due to injury, who had been outstanding in the hooking role in the semi final.
The game started well for Sirius Academy West with a great defensive set, backed up with a great attacking set, which resulted in Leon Stewart going over for an early score, which Lewis Wilson converted to make it 6 – 0. Malet responded well and got a try back straight after when their half backs linked up well to find space out wide 6 – 4. From then on, Malet capitilised on every error from the Sirius side and managed to score another three tries without response to make it 6 – 20 at the halftime break.
Sirius knew they had to score first in the second half for any sort of comeback, and they did just that, some great work from the forwards Connor Rawson and Lewis Walker got Sirius in good field position and after a quick play the ball Keiran Welburn found the impressive Leon Stewart who went over for his second of the afternoon, 12 – 20. Sirius defended well and could have scored again as they got near the Malet tryline, but a poor finish to a superb set saw Malet Lambert go the full length of the pitch to extend their lead to 12 – 26. Malet were full of confidence now and went over for more tries to make it 12 – 36, but credit to Sirius, they did not throw the towel in and had the final word when Leon Stewart completed his hat-trick to make the final score 18 – 36. The boys can hold their heads high as they gave it their all, on a different day with a few more of our injured players back in the team and less mistakes it may have been a different outcome, but we must praise the boys on their attitude and commitment to their rugby this year, they have been one of the most improved teams and should be very proud to have made it to the Hull Schools Final.
