Year 10 cup run continues #keepbelieving
Following a 3rd round victory against George Pelter from Scarborough, the Sirius lads faced a tough Hungerhill team from Doncaster. The team had previously beat this team in last year’s cup 3-2 and looked to repeat this on a cold Wednesday night.
The opponents turned up a bit later than expected, which gave the team time to prepare and get up for the match. In the early stages of the game both teams looked nervous as they were both ‘sloppy’ in possession and slow building up play. However mid-way through the half the deadlock was broken. Some more urgent build up play from the Sirius midfield saw the ball fall towards the Hungerhill keeper, Alfie Pougher showed excellent desire and commitment to snatch the ball near the edge of the 18 and placed the ball in the back of the net. Unfortunately, the opponents soon pulled level when a long range shot led to a rare lack of concentration by Stephen Pougher, who fumbled the ball into the net. Not to be taken back by the shock, Sirius pressed on to take a lead before half time. The goal came near the end of the half, when some excellent skill and strength by Martin Jude was rewarded with a fine finish by Alfie for his second. The half time whistle blew with Sirius leading 2-1.
The second half started brightly for the opponents, on what was a dark evening. They managed to bring the scores level with a fine run beating several Sirius players which was rounded off with an excellent shot past the keeper. Sirius, who were spurred on with the prospect of rival Malet Lambert in the next round, pushed on to retain the lead. Substitute Charlie Morriss made a difference when he opened up space for Callum Baker to make a lightening run from left back into the Hungerhill box. Callum’s speed and control with the ball led to the 3rd Sirius goal as it was met by Alfie in the area to complete his hattrick- well deserving of a man of the match performance. Charlie then showed some desire and fight, following his start on the bench, by extending Sirius’ lead by 2 to 4-2 with a composed finish in the box. With the lead extended changes were made to give other players the opportunity to contribute to this momentous occasion- this included a debut for Shahyar Hosseini, a product of the Martin Smith Scouting system. Shahyar brought some Messi-like skill and trickery to the attack and was very unfortunate not to get a goal to mark this moment.
Just when we all thought the game was over, Charlie Morriss was sent off for what can only be described as a Roy Keane 2 footed lunge. He will now serve a ban and miss the next round. Fortunately, the remaining 10 players remained strong and composed to hold out for a 4-2 win!
