Year 10 Football team close to Hull Cup Final win!
The Year 10 Football team will look back and still wonder how they never managed to win their Hull Schools Cup Final against Malet Lambert. The team produced an excellent display, of controlled, patient Football, creating several chances but unfortunately could not put the ball away at crucial times which allowed Malet to snatch victory at the end.
Sirius fell behind early to a sloppy goal from a set-piece which the defender headed in past a stranded Kieran Bartlett for 1-0. Sirius then settled into the game with Lochlan Fitzgerald picking up the Malet danger player in mid-field and disrupting the Malet passing. The defence marshalled by Robbie Hird, with Luke Collingwood, Jordan Wardell and the excellent Ewan Malton, found their feet and contained everything that Malet threw at them. With Kenan Stephenson and Joseph Wood causing havoc down either wing, it was Luke Salas who showed great control and fired the ball past the keeper for 1-1. With the call to keep playing how we was, the boys switched off defensively from another set-piece and the Malet midfielder hit home for 2-1. Sirius again found themselves on the front foot, with Callum Magee sitting deeper and controlling the pace, and Chris Brown proving a real handful up-front with his size and power. Its took something special from Wood to break the Malet defence down as he hit a ball from 30 metres which flew into the top corner for a spectacular goal. With little time left of the 1st half, we just had to hold out, and a brave piece of defending from Wardell saw a break in the game, which again saw us switch off and Malet scored with the last kick of the half for 3-2.
With nothing changing at half-time, Sirius were confident moving forward with Malet resorting to long passes which Bartlett was ever alert to. Stephenson tried his luck from fully 35 metres and rattled the cross-bar with the keeper beaten but Wood was on hand to smartly follow in and tap the ball home for 3-3. Sirius then spent the next 15 minutes creating chances but could not apply the final finish with Brown, Salas and Wood all going close. The danger was realised with Malet hitting us on the break and tapping home for 4-3. With 10 minutes left Sirius went for it with Will Murphy and Olly Russell adding speed up-front and again chances were created but the ball could not be forced in. Again on the break with a minute on the clock, Malet broke and put the game to bed for a 5-3 score-line.
Please congratulate the following boys on their attitude, behaviour and success this season:
