Year 10 Rugby team march into the Yorkshire Cup Semi-Finals!

[09 Jan 2015]

The Sirius Academy Year 10 Rugby League team battled past a tough York High side to reach their 4th consecutive Champion Schools Yorkshire Cup Semi-Final, and keep their dreams alive of winning the Cup for an historic 3rd consecutive time after their victories in Year 8 and 9. The team were made to battle hard with their opponents forcing the boys to dig deep until the final 15 minutes when Sirius were able to pull away. The team renew rivalries with past opponents Castleford Academy (Wakefield) in the Semi-Final next Thursday.

The match started poorly for Sirius with unforced errors leading to an early York try for 6-0. With Sirius led by captain George Tyson-Wilson, supported by Kai Thorpe, Brad Elliott and Josh Lomax, working their way back into the game, it was the influential pairing of Harry Whittles and Mikey Lewis who created space for Lomax to send the strong-running Josh Jarvis over, with Whittles converting off the touch-line for 6-6. The game turned into a forward based struggle with Sirius guilty of turning the ball over easily, forcing their defence to stand strong with Kieran Sewell, Tom Jordan and Connor Cape-Melbourne leading the way. Two injuries saw Elliott and Ryan Addinall leave the field and York capitalised to score for a half-time lead of 12-6.

With the message of patience and field possession made clear, the Sirius boys started the 2nd half strongly, building pressure. Jacob Smith was excellent in making good yards with Josh Atkinson and Sewell making good runs from dummy-half. Outwide Brett Dorley defended well and Lomax and Kirkland cut off several attacks. Quick thinking from Thorpe from a tap levelled the score at 12-12 before excellent hands from Whittles and Atkinson sent Jarvis over for his 2nd with Whittles again adding the extras from the touch-line for 18-12. With Sirius now taking control it was Lewis over next who threw his trademark dummy to go over before Thorpe closed the scoring with Whittles successful with both kicks for a 30-12 victory.

Please congratulate the following boys on their success, attitude and behaviour:

Josh Atkinson, Callum Whilsher, Ryan Addinall, Brett Dorley, Josh Jarvis, Harry Whittles, Mikey Lewis (Year 9), Tom Jordan, Kieran Sewell, Kai Thorpe, Josh Lomax, Brad Elliott, George Tyson-Wilson, Jacob Smith, Connor Cape-Melbourne, Joseph Coates, Jay Kirkland.
