Year 10 Rugby team reach Yorkshire Cup Final for the 1st time!
The Sirius Academy Year 10 Rugby team continued their successful season, by reaching their 1st ever Carnegie Champion Schools Yorkshire Cup Final. The boys were made to battle hard against a physically strong Temple Moor (Leeds) team, who tested the boys throughout, however Sirius showed great team spirit and determination to hold out and progress through to meet Outwood Grange (Wakefield) in the Final.
The game started at a fast pace with Sirius on the back foot, and despite tough work from Liam Platten and Kai Overton, the sheer pressure saw Temple Moor cross early for a 6-0 lead. This seemed to strike the boys into action, with the ever impressive Harry Tyson-Wilson beginning to stamp his authority on the game, finding willing runners in captain Jamie Warcup, Brandon Hepworth and Josh Jackson. A Tyson-Wilson cross-field kick saw Warcup collect and score, with Liam Harris converting. With Sirius beginning to find the form of their excellent Quarter-Final win over Castleford High, led by the organisation of the outstanding Benn Arbon, Kieran Jones and Harris, who created space for Tyson Wilson to send out a long pass for Hepworth to collect and sprint round for the 2nd try, for a 10-6 lead. Sirius continued to pressure, with Calvin Parker taking the ball forward and Connor Giddings returning kicks well. A good spot from Arbon saw him break through and send a short pass to Jones who crashed over for Harris to goal, for 16-6 Sirius. On the stroke of half-time Hepworth collected another Tyson-Wilson pass to score outwide, with Jones adding a superb goal for a half-time lead of 22-6.
The 2nd half began with Sirius turning over possession easily, allowing Temple Moor opportunities to attack with their strong-running forwards. Sirius held firm, with Tom Hance, Liam Sigurdsson and George Scottow defending well, however Moor crashed over for two quick tries to pull the score back to 22-18, with 18 minutes remaining, and Sirius were struggling. However the team spirit of Sirius began to show with the defence holding strong on the try-line under sustained pressure, and when in possession Tyson-Wilsons long kicks allowed Sirius vital space. With 2 minutes remaining Moor were camped on the Sirius try-line, with Sirius defending for 18 tackles, before a loose ball was kicked on from Harris who the collected and sprinted the length of the pitch, showing great speed and stamina, to score under the sticks and with an Arbon goal, Sirius celebrated a famous 28-18 victory and their deserved place in the Final.
