Year 10 Rugby Union go close to 1st victory!
The Year 10 Rugby Union team went close to gaining their 1st win at Rugby Union against Hymers College in only their 2nd game. The boys have had to learn the game quickly in their two matches playing against teams whose players play the sport regularly at club level. The team were again left to rue the technical aspects of the game, with the way Sirius played with the ball and defended been to a much higher standard than the opposition, unfortunately scrums and rucks were not our best points. The defeat leaves the team in the Yorkshire Cup were they will face St Marys College.
The match started with Sirius keeping possession of the ball well, forwards Jon Mills, Ray Brown and Kai Thorpe made good yards. However as the half went on it became apparent the opposition wished to turn the match into a technical battle with numerous kicks and scrums leaving the Sirius boys frustrated. They continued to work hard and were unlucky when Thorpe pushed a penalty kick wide which was quickly followed by a Hymers try for 5-0. Sirius threw caution to the wind (and the rain) and began to move the ball around and would have levelled but were pulled back for a forward pass when Luke Salas was put away into open space. On the stroke of half-time Hymers crossed again for 10-0.
With instructions to continue moving the ball and stay out of technical breakdowns, Sirius had more success. Quick hands from Kenan Stephenson and Ray Brown put Salas away who sprinted clear with Stephenson adding the extras for 10-7. Hymers were not expecting the close score-line and again looked to take Sirius into the scrum situations as much as possible. With Sirius pressing for a winner, Hymers took advantage to cross wide-out to take a 17-7 win.
Special thanks to Janice Hall for driving and supporting the boys.
