Year 10 team compete in 1st ever Rugby Union match!
The Sirius Academy Year 10 Rugby Union team took part in an Academy 1st yesterday as they became the 1st team from Sirius to compete in a Rugby Union match. Despite limited knowledge of the game and coming up against an opposition in Hull Collegiate that consisted of players who all play the sport regularly, the team came very close to pulling off an amazing win and left the field with many new admirers due to the style of play they brought. The team now drop to the Natwest Schools National Vase competition whilst they also are entered into the Yorkshire Cup.
The game started with Sirius learning from mistakes and attempting to get to grips with rules they were not accustomed too. An early opportunity saw Kai Thorpe slot a penalty over for a 3-0 lead before Josh Lomax intercepted and raced away for a try with a Thorpe goal giving Sirius a 10-0 lead, leaving Collegiate stunned. However as the 1st half went on the technical aspects of the game became more evident and Sirius surrendered possession for two Collegiate tries to fall behind 14-10. Credit to the team who followed instruction to keep moving the ball around and scored the try of the game after quick hands found Ewan Malton who sprinted clear with Thorpe adding the extras for a 17-14 lead. On the stroke of half-time Collegiate crashed over for a 19-14 score.
The 2nd half saw Sirius pick the rules up better, retaining possession more and this resulted in Lomax grabbing his 2nd of the match, quickly followed by Ray Brown dummying his way over to put Sirius 29-19 in-front. Two quick-fire tries from Collegiate, again due to the technical skills put them 31-29 up, but back came Sirius with Malton grabbing his 2nd try and with a Thorpe goal, Sirius were 36-31 in-front with ten minutes left. Collegiate again rattled in two quick tries to take a 43-36 lead before Thorpe kicked through for Lomax to get his hat-trick and level the scores at 43-43 with two minutes left. However victory was denied as Collegiate crashed over in the next set for their 48-43 win.
