Year 10’s Rugby – South Holderness 12 Sirius Academy 22
Sirius Academy Year 10 boys took on the National Champions South Holderness looking for revenge on last year’s narrow defeat in the National Semi Finals, which saw South Holderness go on and win the final. The game was evenly matched in the early exchanges, with both defences looking solid, with Connor Cape Melbourne leading the way for the Sirius team. The deadlock was broken after ten minutes as South Holderness capitalised on two errors on the first tackle by Sirius Academy and they went over for a try in the corner, which they couldn’t convert. Sirius replied well and got into some good field position, with Kai Thorpe and George Tyson-Wilson making good yards forward down the middle of the park. Ten yards out from the South Holderness try line, Harry Whittles called a good play on the right hand side as Sirius got the ball out wide to Jacob Smith who went over, Harry Whittles also converted. It remained 6 – 4 in favour of Sirius till the last play of the first half when South Holderness again found some space out wide and went over to make the halftime scoreline 8 – 4.
Sirius knew that if they cut out the basic errors and played out their sets of six there would be more opportunities for points on the board. Again the defence of the Sirius side was outstanding, with the line speed forcing South Holderness into making errors of their own, which this time Sirius capitalised on, a great quick play the ball resulted in Jordan Richmond stepping his was across the tryline, which Whittles converted to put Sirius in the lead at 12 – 8. A quick response from South Holdernes brought the scores level with 8 minutes remaining. Both teams were playing some good rugby and it was going to come down to who controlled the ball the best in the final stages of the game. Josh Atkinson and Brad Elliott were taking the ball away from their own tryline well, and with a good kick and chase on the last tackle they hunted the mistake from South Holderness on their try line, and the hard work paid off as South Holderness knocked on early in the tackle count. Some great organising from the half backs created space out wide for Josh Jarvis who showed real strength to get over the tryline in the corner. Whittles missed his first conversion of the game, so the scoreline was 16 – 12 with only four minutes on the clock. From the kick off the Sirius team controlled the ball well and ended in good field position, another solid set in defence meant they got the ball back on the halfway line, and as the South Holderness team tired, it was Jordan Richmond who spotted a gap in the defence and raced through, stepping the fullback to go in under the sticks and seal the victory. The scoreline finished South Holderness 12 Sirius Academy 22, which means all 5 of the age groups at Sirius Academy have now made it through to the Hull Schools Finals, a first for the Academy and a massive achievement for all involved.
