Sirius Academy West 26 Archbishop Sentamu 24
Sirius Academy West Year 11 Boys ended their school rugby with some silverware after beating a good Archbishop Sentamu side in the Hull Schools Plate final.
Right from the off Sirius dominated the game and got an early try thanks to Leon Stewarts strength to get over the line. The defence of the Sirius side was outstanding as they managed to keep Archbishop Sentamu out for 18 tackles on their own tryline. After seeing out a tough defensive spell, they then showed their class in attack with the forwards leading the way, strong runs from Joe Aitcheson and Joe Burazin put Sirius in some great field position, and when Kai Green managed to get a quick play the ball, fullback Leon Stewart saw the gap and raced over 40 metres to go in at the corner, Ben Canvass converted to make it 10 – 0. Sirius didn’t stop there and was playing some excellent rugby. Tyrone Wilsher at hooker was making all the right decisions and when the half backs linked up near the tryline, it was Brandon Sargesson who hit a great line and went over under the sticks to make it 16 – 0. The scoreline remained the same till the halftime break.
The second half Archbishop Sentamu came out fighting, and when lack of discipline from Sirius gave them back to back penalties they eventually went over on the last tackle to make it 16 – 4. Sirius responded immediately with the try of the game, the overlap out-wide was spotted by Ben Canvass who threw a superb ball out to winger Tom Wilkinson who dived over in the corner to extend the lead to 20 – 4. Lack of concentration in the Sirius defence gave Archbishop a lifeline back into the game as they went over to make it 20 – 8. Once again, Sirius responded immediately as Leon Stewart showed his agility, strength and pace to run 90 metres to go in under the sticks to make it 28 – 8. It looked like the game was over with ten minutes to go, but credit to Archbishop Sentamu they did not throw the towel in, and coupled with poor game management from Sirius, they managed to let them back into the game as the scoreline finished 26 – 24 in favour of Sirius Academy.
It is fantastic for these group of boys to end with some silverware in their final year at school, they fully deserved the victory and have been an absolute pleasure to coach over the last few years where they have really come into their own and gain in confidence and belief. Hopefully these boys will stay on at Sirius college and continue with their rugby success at the Academy.
Please congratulate the squad on their performance, attitude and behaviour of this very talented year group:-
