In their last ever rugby league tournament the Year 11 girls showed great character and determination against some very good, big, strong and organised sides.
Huntington 12 Sirius 4
Sirius paid the price for a slow start and Huntington went over for two quick tries after the defensive line failed to move up together. Sirius did get a great try back in the late stages of the game though, captain Paris Turpin put up a great kick, which was knocked on by the Huntington player and on the back of the resulting set of six for Sirius it was Ebony Hepworth who took on the line and drew the player to send Olivia Young over in the corner.
Castleford High 16 Sirius 0
Sirius faced the National Champions the next game and did not let themselves down. Some good runs from year 10’s Jodie Shimmells and Megan Kay broke the defence on a number of occasions, but the Castleford team was just too organised and strong. Some good tackles came in from Robyn Everett and Courtney Thompson, but the girls just could not stop them from going over the 3 tries in the 10 minute match. A brave effort from the Sirius side.
Settle 12 Sirius 0
In the third game debuts were handed to Chelsea Seward, Chloe Dibb and Jess Mason, giving some of the Year 10’s a well-earned rest. Shannon Kay and Paris Turpin, the more experienced Sirius players tried their best in defence and attack, but again the opposition proved too strong, going over for two tries. Abbie Longley was the stand out performer of this game, taking the ball in well, using power and strength.
Freeston 4 Sirius 0
This game was here for the taking, as the Freeston side looked a little disorganised, but the Sirius girls made a couple of errors on the first tackle, and then when once again their defence failed to move up together, the Freeston player took advantage of the big gaps in the middle of the field and raced over for the only try of the game.
Royds 10 Sirius 6
The girls ended their year 11 Sirius rugby career with a much improved performance, although they failed to win this match, Ebony Hepworth went over for a fine individual try, showing pace and skill to go through the gap and score the final try of the game.
The Sirius Academy girls deserve a lot of praise of their efforts today, no-one took a backward step and there was big improvements as the tournament progressed. Most importantly the girls really enjoyed playing in the tournament and the experience of playing full contact rugby league for Sirius Academy.
Please congratulate the girls on their attitude, commitment and behaviour.
