Year 11 Girls Yorkshire Tournanent

[09 Feb 2018]

The Year 11 Girls played in their last Yorkshire Competition for Sirius Academy West after playing in every Yorkshire Tournament since Year 7. Unfortunately we were 6 players down from our usual team due to various reasons, but credit to some of the girls that came in to take their place, some never having played rugby before.

Sirius Academy West 2 Featherstone 2

Sirius started the tournament in fine form, and the new girls really getting to grips with the rules and getting stuck in. Featherstone scored first but great character from Sirius West saw Danny Waters step her way through to level the scores. Featherstone responded immediately to make it 2 – 1, and as the minutes ticked away it looked like Sirius may have lost the game, but again captain Danny Waters came to the rescue, a great quick play the ball from Chloe Dunn enabled Danny to scoot over and draw the match.

Next up for the West girls was the National Champions St John Fisher, this did not phase the Sirius squad as they gave it everything, but the class of the St John Fisher side shone through as they ran in three good tries without answer.

Sirius Academy West 2 Featherstone 3

With only three in the group, the teams played each other twice. Whoever won this one would go through as the semi finalists and face Castleford Academy. It was a very evenly matched game, with Lauren Sutton levelling the scores at 1 – 1 with her very first try for Sirius West in her five years of never missing a game (well done to Lauren, great commitment). Featherstone made it 2 – 1 before Danny Waters went over to make it 2 – 2. Whoever scored next would go through and unfortunately Sirius ran out of steam and it was Featherstone who made it 3 – 2.

The Sirius side were looking tired, and to face the National Champions was another hurdle too far for them, however, they did not throw the towel in and kept going till the end, the girls should be very proud of their performance today!

Please congratulate the team on their attitude, behaviour and performance, they were a credit to the Academy, and i hope to see most of them in our College team next year!
