Year 11 Rugby boys make Hull Schools Cup Final!
The Sirius Academy Year 11 Rugby boys continued their excellent careers at the Academy after reaching the last Final of the season in the Hull Schools Cup Final. The team, despite been low on numbers, produced a solid display to defeat a game Wolfreton side 32-6. The team who lay claim to be the most successful team to come from the Academy after winning several titles in their time, including County Cups and the National Cup title, will face St Marys College in what will be the last match for them in Sirius colours.
Sirius started the match with several positional changes enforced through absence and illness, however this did not reflect in the opening stages as the boys took the game straight to the Wolfreton team, forcing errors with good line speed and controlling position smartly. As always Kai Thorpe and George Tyson-Wilson got through a mountain of work in both defence and attack with Connor Cape-Melbourne having an excellent game with his strong go-forward creating havoc with every carry. Jordan Richmond created the 1st try for Brad Elliott with a neat inside pass which Thorpe goaled for 6-0. With numbers low, the outside backs came in to take a lot of work off the forwards with Callum Wilsher, Ryan Addinnall and Jay Kirkland impressing. Lewis Hewitt and Richmond continued to control the play and a Richmond cross-field kick was collected by Elliott to grab his 2nd try for 10-0. As the half wore on Kieran Sewell began to use his smartness and speed from dummy-half to get at the tiring defence and this created a try for the supporting Josh Atkinson to put Sirius 16-0 up. On the stroke of half-time a Richmond cut out pass hit a rampaging Luke Moss who sprinted clear to hand Sirius a 22-0 half-time advantage.
The 2nd half saw Wolfreton match the Sirius team for long periods as both teams produced some good Rugby and tough defence. Thorpe put the game beyond Wolfreton after crashing over from a Sewell drop-off. Credit to Wolfreton who refused to give up and were rewarded with a try of their own after a neat set move for 26-6. Fittingly it was Sirius who had the final word with Tyson-Wilson breaking clear after an excellent dummy before handing over to the supporting Atkinson who grabbed his 2nd of the afternoon and duly added the extras off the touchline for a 32-6 win and a Final spot.
Special thanks to Rach Gay for her support with the team, Shawn Boatin, Steve Rodgers and Martin Smith for their support tonight. Also to ex 6th former, Harry Brigham for his help as always with the lads.
