Year 11 Rugby boys move closer to retaining National Cup!
The Sirius Academy Year 11 Rugby team moved safely into the RFL Champion Schools National Cup Quarter-Finals, as they seek to become the 1st ever boys team from the Academy to successfully defend a National Cup trophy. The team dispatched the top seeds from the Cumbria region, St Benedict’s Catholic High School with a strong performance in Wigan. They will now face either Castleford Academy or Hope Academy (St Helens) in a Quarter-Final match-up.
Sirius started the match in sensational fashion as the influential Jordan Richmond caught the Benedict’s kick-off and sent Josh Jarvis clear through to race away for the opening try after fifteen seconds with Kai Thorpe goaling for 6-0. Any hope of run-away 1st half were dashed when Benedict’s replied with a clever try of their own after five minutes to pull the score back to 6-4. Forwards, Thorpe, Tom Jordan, Brad Elliott and George Tyson-Wilson settled the game back down with strong carries and quick play the balls, allowing Kieran Sewell and Josh Atkinson to use their speed to push the opposition back into their own half. These attacks allowed Richmond to create space on the left-edge with Jarvis and the impressive Jacob Smith making numerous breaks. Jarvis was the main beneficiary, racing over for three consecutive tries to bring his total to four tries with all goaled by Thorpe for a 24-4 advantage. Lewis then created the final try of the half with a neat cut-out pass for Ryan Addinnall to race over for a 30-4 lead.
Sirius began the 2nd half in the manner they finished the 1st, with strong runs led by Connor Cape-Melbourne and Josh Lomax, putting Sirius on the attack, with Lewis Hewitt using the ball smartly from dummy-half. Declan Jackson’simpact was immediate with several strong carries making the yards for Tyson-Wilson to add the first try of the half, crashing over from a short Thorpe pass. A free-flowing move saw Callum Wilsher over next with Atkinson providing the final pass before Jarvis claimed his 5th try of the match to take the score to 46-4 after more successful Thorpe goals. Elliott got his name on the score-sheet with a quick-fire double of tries, using his strength to barge over from close range before Wilsher finished off the Sirius scoring to bring the score to 58-4. Credit to Benedict’s who finished the match with a late try to leave the score at 58-8 in Sirius’ favour.
