The Sirius Academy Year 11 team lost out to a physical St Wilfred’s (Wakefield) team in the 2nd round of the Yorkshire Cup. The match played in terrible weather conditions, was determined by the team who controlled the ball best, and maintained discipline, and unfortunately for the Sirius players this proved not to be them. The team battled hard throughout with the score-line running away from them in the final ten minutes, however with a team consisting of three Year 9 boys and two Year 10 boys, there are many who can hold their head high.
The game started with Sirius running into the strong wind and heavy rain, with the game plan to slow the game down, and control the ball. The team did this well, with Lewis Calvert and Liam Platten taking numerous drives supported by Kai Overton and Liam Sigurddson. Wilfred’s were 1st over to lead 6-0, however Sirius did not let their heads drop, with Peter Butcher and Jamie Warcup willing workers. Lochlan Fitzgerald was excellent in the middle of the pitch despite playing two years above, and Chris Brown likewise did not shy away from any work. Warcup created a try for Kieran Jones with Liam Harris converting for 6-6 at half-time.
With the wind at their backs, Sirius should have done the hard work, however failure to complete with the ball and penalties gave Wilfred’s field position and gradually frustrated and tired the smaller Sirius team. Hard work from Brandon Hepworth and two Year 10 boys in Connor Giddings and Liam Moss proved in vain as Wilfred’s ran in three late tries to take a deserved 22-6 victory.
Please congratulate the following boys on their attitude and effort:
Connor Gidings (Year 10), Liam Sigurddson, Brandon Hepworth, Jon Godwin, Kieran Jones, Liam Harris, Liam Platten, Lewis Calvert, Kai Overton, Peter Butcher, Jamie Warcup, Liam Moss (Year 10), Tom Hance, Lochlan Fitzgerald (Year 9), Chris Brown (Year 9), Kenan Stephenson (Year 9).
