Year 11 Rugby team move into National Semi-Finals!
The Sirius Academy Year 11 Rugby team produced an excellent 2nd half display to advance past a brave Deanery High School (Wigan) team, and move into their third Carnegie Champion Schools National Cup Semi-Final, in the past three years. The boys again showed their outstanding skills as well as their team spirit, to earn their Semi-Final spot and a match up against either Honley (Huddersfield) or St Edmond-Arrowsmith (Wigan).
The game started with Sirius been pushed back, and finding it hard to get out of their half. With Joe Burton and Liam Robinson battling hard against the large Deanery pack, Sirius began to find their feet. However poor reads in defence allowed to sloppy tries in, and Sirius were 10-0 down with 12 minutes of the half remaining. Refusing to be pressured, Sirius showed composure and patience to work their way into good field positions, and a delayed pass from the impressive Josh Wood sent the rampaging Aiden Armstrong over under the sticks with Robinson converting for 10-6. Sirius again worked up field, with strong running from James Buttery, Armstrong and Macauley Hallett, making yards, and quick hands resulted in Liam Bilton crossing outwide, with Jordan Abdull adding the conversion for a 12-10 lead. On the stroke of half time an excellent spot from Wood who kicked on the 1st tackle for the impressive Lewis Hackett to chase and score, with Robinson adding the extras for a half time lead of 18-10.
The 2nd half proved to be a classy showing from Sirius who dominated the entire half. Any little pressure Sirius did have to defend was dealt with by brave full-back play from Year 10, Liam Harris, and relieving runs from Hackett and Liam Gordon. With Steven Marshall, Andy Ogden, Burton and Robinson laying solid platforms for Abdull, Wood and Jansin Turgut to hit the wide runners, Sirius looked dangerous with ball in hand. Macauley Duke was 1st over capitalising on a Robinson offload, before Robinson himself crashed over off a delayed Abdull pass for 30-10 to Sirius. Buttery was next over finishing off quikc hands, before Hallett grabbed a deserved try for his hard work, for a 38-10 advantage. Perhaps the try of the match followed, with Buttery been sent away down the wing, and he showed great pace in rounding the full back and sprinting clear, with Abdull adding two more for 44-10. A final deserved try was added by Turgut who run a great line off an excellent Stephen Batty pass, to leave Sirius 50-10 victors.
Please congratulate the following boys on their success, attitude and behaviour:
