Year 11 Rugby team reach Yorkshire Cup Semi-Finals and National Cup stages!

[20 Jan 2012]

The Year 11 Rugby team continued their march towards a third successive Carnegie Champion Schools Yorkshire Cup title with a comprehensive victory over York High, in cold and wet conditions. The win which puts the boys into the Semi-Final stages of the competition, also qualifies them for the Champion Schools National Cup, the only trophy that they are yet to win as a team. Their Semi-Final opponents are Honley High, who are the Kirklees and District Champions.

The game started with Sirius producing some brutal defence, led by Josh Wood, Jansin Turgut and Jordan Abdull, they continually drove the attackers back, and their aggression laid the platform for the rest of the match. Creating chances early on was difficult in the windy conditions and it took an inside pass for Liam Robinson to crash over with Abdull converting for a 6-0 lead. Two quick tries for Sirius proved crucial, as the outstanding James Buttery crossed out wide before a devastating length of the field run from Macauley Hallett gave Sirius a 16-0 lead. On the stroke of half-time Buttery crossed for his 2nd with another Abdull goal for a half-time lead of 22-0.

The 2nd half again started with strong running and defence, led by Liam Bilton and Joe Burton, with Lewis Hackett and Wood looking dangerous everytime they got the ball. A delayed pass sent Buttery sprinting away to grab his hat-trick try and moved Sirius to an unassailable 28-0 lead. Credit to York who pulled a try back, however Year 10 player, Harry Tyson-Wilson, added to his ever-growing reputation as he weaved through the defence to cross under the posts to complete a great personal performance. There was time however for the Hallett who terrorised the defence at every opportunity to crash over for two late tries to complete his hat-trick, with Abdull converting for an outstanding 46-4 victory.

Special thanks to Rachel Gay for supporting and assisting with the boys.

Please congratulate the following students on their success and attitude:
