Year 11 Rugby team win the Hull Premier League!

[12 Oct 2015]

The Sirius Academy Year 11 Rugby team added another title to their ever-growing collection as they defeated Archbishop Sentamu to win the Hull Schools Premier League. The team in their final year as a school side, are aiming to finish on a high and add another National Cup trophy to the one they won in Year 10, and took the first step by claiming the local League crown and with it the top seed from Hull into the Yorkshire Cup competition.

The match started in typically quick fashion from the Sirius boys as they dominated the early exchanges, with forwards Kai Thorpe and George Tyson-Wilson working smartly together and Kieran Sewell making good yards from dummy-half. Josh Jarvis was first over after a cut-out pass from Mikey Lewis with Thorpe goaling for 6-0. Josh Atkinson who was a threat allnight created the 2nd with Sewell finding him who fed Jacob Smith who raced over to double the lead. Archbishop began to settle into the game and after sustained pressure looked like they could get back into the game but Josh Lomax intercepted on his own try-line and ran 50 metres before finding Ryan Addinnall who finished off the try to move Sirius to 18-0 up. Jay Kirkland, Connor Cape-Melbourne and Brad Elliott kept Sirius on the front foot however the tide turned and Archbishop ran in three quick tries before half-time to pull the score back to 18-16.

With composure and patience the key messages, Sirius started well again, with Sewell sending Jarvis racing over for a try from 50 metres. Credit to Archbishop again who hit straight back with two quick tries to take a 28-24 lead. Lewis Hewitt and Declan Jackson came on to add extra steel to the Sirius defence with Jack Arnett playing in an unusual position wide-out to take care of the dangerous Archbishop strike player. Luke Moss broke through and sent Atkinson over for a try only for Archbishop to hit back again. Brad Elliott was next over to hand Sirius the lead back, but to the dismay of the players and coaches, Archbishop scored again to take a 38-36 lead with two minutes left. Sirius needed a big play and it came as it so often does from Thorpe who firstly managed a 1 on 1 ball steal to get possession back and then crashed over for the winning try to give Sirius an entertaining 40-38 victory.

Special thanks to Glen Bilton and Rachel Gay for their assistance with the team and to Cosi Basile, Martin Smith, Lewis Jarvis and Jon White for their support.
