Year 7 battle to victory in Yorkshire Cup!

[28 Nov 2011]

The Sirius Academy Year 7 Rugby League team battled bravely through to the 2nd round of the Carengie Champion Schools Yorkshire Cup, with a tough 14-10 victory over an excellent Outwood Grange (Wakefield).

The game started well for Sirius with props Tom Jordan and Kai Thorpe running strongly, supported well by the lively Lloyd Cass. In the early stages however Sirius were dealt a huge blow when one of their main strike players Brad Elliot left the field, unable to return with injury. This shocked Sirius, was Outwood capitilising to score to take a 6-0 lead. Sirius battled back, with two thunderous tackles from Thorpe causing mayhem in the Outwood attack. With the strong-running Ben Macklin and hard-working Captain George Tyson-Wilson, making good ground, Sirius created space for Jordan to send over the outstanding Callum Whilser, to leave Sirius trailing 6-4 at half-time.

Again Sirius started the 2nd half strongly with good yards from Josh Atkinson, Macklin and Tyson, creating space for chief-organiser Harry Whittles and Joseph Coates to call the shots. Good work from Whittles, allowed Thorpe to send over Joseph Thompson on debut to hand Sirius an 8-6 lead. Back came Outwood to score with 7 minutes remaining, to take back the lead 10-8. However not to panic Sirius battled up the pitch and threw everything at the defence, with Josh Kirby, Cass and Jordan Webb going close, however it took an outstanding Whittles kick, collected for Thorpe to crash over and convert to give Sirius their victory!

2nd round opponents for the boys are either St Edwards (Sheffield) or St John Fisher (Kirklees)

Lloyd Cass, Jordan Webb, Joseph Thompson, Callum Whilser, Josh Atkinson, Harry Whittles, Joseph Coates, Tom Jordan, Josh Kirby, Kai Thorpe, Josh Lomax, Brad Elliot, George Tyson-Wilson (c), Rowan Foster, Kieran Sewell, Ben Macklin, Jay Stephenson.
