Year 7 Football boys crowned County champions!
The Sirius Academy Year 7 Football team claimed their 2nd trophy of their short school careers thus far after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Wolfreton saw the team crowned Humberside Champions to go alongside their Hull Schools 5 a-side championship. The boys return to action on Monday as they face Malet Lambert as they look to secure “the Treble” in the Hull Schools Cup Final. The boys showed a different side to their game as they had to battle hard against a very game Wolfreton side and will no doubt face this team again over the coming seasons.
Sirius started the game in slow fashion as they came to terms with the long and narrow pitch. Tom Overton made several telling tackles at the back as he led the back three well all game. George Petty was called into action early to deny the Wolfreton forward with an excellent save low to his left. As Sirius settled down Jack Cutler on the left began to get some success with Harry Wallis beginning to stamp his authority on the game. Kieran Welburn and Josh Smith looked assured defensively as they dealt with the long ball from the Wolfreton defence. Harry Fenton created Sirius’ 1st chance as he put Alfie Sumpton away who was denied by a good save from his lobbed effort. Mason Palmer came into the game more as the half developed showing some neat touches to create space for Fenton and Wallis. Half-time came without no team breaking the deadlock.
Sirius looked to play the ball quicker into space in the 2nd half with Carrington Walker coming on to have a good impact on the right hand side of midfield. Fenton was denied twice by smart saves from the keeper as Wallis continued to probe forward. At the back Overton, Welburn and Smith all made telling interventions at crucial times with Petty alert to any kicks over, as the game ebbed and flowed. As the game entered towards the last ten minutes an excellent pass from Walker sent Fenton free who rounded the keeper and shot goal-wards with a Wolfreton defender stopping the ball just short of the line however Palmer was on hand to prod the ball home to put Sirius 1-0 up. Daniel Chadwick and Renaldas Sokolovas entered the game to add energy into the Sirius team who had worked hard for their lead. As the game ticked away, Fenton was again unlucky with another two good saves forced with Wallis just firing over a free-kick as Sirius chased the clinching goal. As Sirius continued to push on, the referee blew the whistle to give the Sirius boys their 1st major 9 a side Cup to continue their magnificent season.
Special thanks to Cosi Basile for driving the bus and supporting the boys, Martin Smith for his continued help in coaching the team and Jon White for coming to support the lads.
