Year 7 Football boys into National Cup 4th Round!
The Sirius Academy Year 7 Football team maintained their unbeaten run to finish a successful week after Monday night’s Hull Schools 5 a-side championships victory, with a hard fought win over a tough Winterton Academy (Scunthorpe). The side struggled for periods of the game, with a subdued performance but in the final ten minutes they stepped up and scored the required goals to move them into the next round of the National competition.
The match saw the first half begin with Sirius having the wind behind their backs but the boys struggled to break down a stubborn Winterton defence. The Sirius defence all stepped up to keep the match scoreless with Josh Smith making a crucial tackle with the forward clear through on goal, Tom Overton made three crucial last second tackles as well as Oliver Walker clearing the ball off the line as Sirius rode their luck. Sirius had one golden opportunity in the first half as a long George Petty kick sent Alfie Sumpton clear but he could only hit the post to leave Sirius at 0-0 half-time.
The 2nd half began, with Harry Fenton and Harry Wallis getting on the ball more with Jack Cutler, Tyler Leighton and Carrington Walker willing runners wide-out. Against the run of play, Winterton broke clear and poked the ball home to take a 1-0 lead with twenty minutes remaining. Sirius settled down to immediately go in search of an equaliser but the game could have been put beyond the boys were it not for a superb save from Petty to keep the score at 1-0. As time ticked into the final fifteen minutes, Fenton battled well in the Winterton penalty area and won the ball back with a neat pass allowing Sumpton to loft the ball above the keeper for 1-1. This reenergised Sirius who took hold of the game, and a good ball from Wallis sent Cutler clear who squared the ball for Sumpton to score his 2nd goal for 2-1. With time ticking away, Renaldas Sokolovas came on to add extra support to the defence, led superbly by Overton, and another quick break saw Overton pressure the keeper into a mistake to allow Sumpton to tap home his hat-trick for a 3-1 victory.
Please congratulate the following boys on their success, attitude and behaviour:
Tom Overton, Josh Smith, Harry Wallis, Carrington Walker, Harry Fenton, Alfie Sumpton, Renaldas Sokolovas, Oliver Walker, Jack Cutler, George Petty, Tyler Leighton.
Special thanks to Martin Smith for his help coaching the team and to David Gordon, Alex Sherwood and Cosi Basile for their support.
