Year 7 football report – Winifred Holtby 2 Sirius 4
Winifred Holtby 2 Sirius 4
Sirius moved into the semi-finals of the Hull’s school Cup last night with a performance that showed a huge amount of character and desire to win.
From the starting whistle Sirius were the better side and should have scored in the first 60 seconds with an excellent passing which saw 7 players touch the ball before the Holtby keeper produced an excellent save to stop Harry Knight scoring. That moment set the tone for pretty much the whole match with Sirius dominating large periods of the game for the Holtby keeper to make some excellent saves, for last ditch tackles to be made or for shoots to go just wide.
Winifred Holtby’s out let was the long ball over the top to a very strong centre forward, who was marshalled very well by Alex Appleby, Callum Baker and Jamie Gould. In the first half Holtby did create one clear cut chance only for Kane Tock to produce a very brave save at the feet of the forward to keep the score at 0-0.
Sirius continued to push for the opening goal and with about 10 minutes of the half left Stephen Pougher scored a great goal from the edge of the area. The move had started at the half way line with with Callum Baker playing Dominic Litwinski down the right he pulled the ball back to a very impressive Jak Langley (who kept the midfield ticking over all game) he played the ball short to Josh Jarvis who pushed the ball square to Stephen, who controlled the ball and hit a great shot into the corner. Sadly Sirius could not get the second goal their play deserved so at half time it was 1-0 to Sirius.
The second half started much like the first with Sirius on top playing all the football and Winifred Holtby looking for long and diagonal balls over the top. Again Sirius missed a hat full of chances with Charlie Morriss, Harry Knight, Josh Jarvis, Alex Appleby and Jak Langley all either going close or producing saves from the keeper. However at 1-0 the boys never felt safe and with only 20 minutes left Holtby hit a crossed field ball behind Callum Baker which looked to have gone out but played continued the Holtby forward got to the by-line pulled the ball back for the other forward to slot it home. 1-1l.
The goal gave Holtby a real boost and for the next 5 minutes they looked very dominant and created a couple of half chances, Sirius then gave a free kick away on the edge of the area and the Holtby player lifted it over the wall and into the far corner 2-1 to Holtby with 15 minutes left to play.
What happened next 10 minutes was some determined football I have seen in a long time. Lead by Jak Langley, Josh Jarvis, Alex Appleby and man of the match Stephen Pougher, Sirius simply took over, they won ever tackle, every header and powered forward. Again Charlie Morriss went close, Harry Knight hit the bar, Alfie Pougher produced a great save from the keeper, Josh Jarvis and Jak Langley also went close. The crowd on the side line were really beginning to think that the equaliser would not come. Thankfully it did and was almost a copy of the first this time it was down the left hand side Alfie Pougher played the ball square to Josh Jarvis to played to square again to Stephen Pougher who was screaming for it on the edge of the area. Once again Stephen hit and unstoppable shot 2-2.
There was only one time likely to win now and that was Sirius Martin Jude, Harry Storr and Nathan Voakes all entered the game and all made an impact. Harry played a great ball at the half way line to Martin Jude who had lost his marker he looked up to see Nathan Voakes making a great run which dragged a defender out of position and allowed Martin to feed the ball through to Harry Knight, who ran through on goal to slot it home 3-2 to Sirius.
Andrew Ramsden came on for the last 10 minutes to tighten up the middle of the field but Sirius keep looking for another goal to kill the game off and it came from Martin Jude who slotted in a rebound from a Harry Storr shot.
The boys were simply excellent and showed great self- belief please congratulate all the boys.
