Sirius Academy 3 Malet Lambert 1

Sirius Academy Year 7 Girls football team have managed to secure their place in the 5th Round of the National Cup with a hard fought 3 – 1 victory against Malet Lambert.

The game started very evenly matched with both sides cancelling each other out in the middle of the park. Sirius Academy started to push forward and have some good opportunities in front of goal that was well saved by the Malet Lambert keeper. Alyx Worth and Georgia Coggin were dominating in the middle showing real energy and strength to win the ball back and put Sirius on the front foot. Wingers Alisha Dayes and Ellie Robertson were looking a threat out wide and playing some good balls through to Isabella Taylor. Sirius were looking the  better team in the later stages of the first half and made their good possession count after Ellie Robertson played a fine ball through to striker Isabella Taylor who scored from an awkward angle with a great finish to take the lead before the halftime break.

Changes were made in the second half with Abbie Brennan and Kadie Laws coming on out wide and looking good on the ball and also getting back in defence well. Malet really attacked the Sirius goal and could have equalised, but a fantastic save from Lucy Sainty in goal ensured Malet Lambert did not get back into the game. The back three of Jess Toner, Phoebe Armstrong and Rachel Robinson were looking solid at the back with very little getting through them. Then on the counter attack Sirius managed to double the lead, a great run from Isabella Taylor down the middle saw her shot deflected and go into the back of the net to make the scoreline 2 – 0. Taylor thought she had scored her hat-trick shortly after but the correct decision of offside was given by 6th form referee Jacob Horner.  Credit to Malet Lambert they kept working hard and got their rewards when they chased down a long ball and got on the end of it to make it for a tense finish. Paige Collingwood was brought on to bring some added energy to the team down the wing as Sirius looked to defend their lead. Sirius kept the ball well and still looked dangerous in attack, with Ellie Robertson taking the defence on at every opportunity and earning her side a string of corners. Sirius sealed the victory after a superb strike from attacking midfielder Georgia Coggin to make the final score 3 – 1 and see this very energetic and enthusiastic Sirius team progress onto the 5th Round of the National Cup, where they have another home tie against a team from Nottingham or Leicester.

Please congratulate the Year 7 Girls on their continued success in the National Cup, as well as their outstanding attitude and behaviour. It certainly was a real squad effort to ensure they got the victory.
