Year 7 Girls Qualify for Yorkshire Stages of the Schools Rugby Competition

[10 Jan 2020]

Last night the Year 7 girls played in their first ever rugby tournament, they won 2 games and lost 1 meaning that they finished in 2nd place and qualify for the Yorkshire Competition in March.

Sirius Academy West 6 Archbishop Sentamu “B” 1
Sirius Academy started the competition well with a convincing win over the Archbishop Sentamu “B” team.  Brooke Williamson opened the scoring with a fine solo try proving too fast and strong for the Archbishop Sentamu defence as she broke through and ran nearly the full length of the pitch, Lauren Culliney was next on the score-sheet as she showed her pace by running around the defence to score in the corner. Maddie Oakes came into the game well and showed how dangerous she could be and went over for a couple of good tries of her own. Archbishop Sentamu got one back before Sirius Academy scored two more tries to secure their first win, 6  tries to 1.

Sirius Academy West 5 Sirius Academy North 2
The Sirius derby was next up, and it was Sirius North who started the game the best as they went over on their first set of six. Sirius responded well with Brooke Williamson going over to level the scores. Sirius West were next to score to take the lead but Sirius North levelled shortly after. Just before the halftime break smart thinking from captain Emily Last saw her scoot over from close range to make it 3 – 2. In the second half, some good defence from the tough Amy Lyons prevented Sirius North from going over on many occasions.  In attack Keisha Allett came into the game more showing her lighting pace to go over for a couple of tries and  secure the victory, 5 tries to 2.

Sirius Academy West 2 Archbishop Sentamu “A” 4
Sirius knew that the result of this game would see which team would go through as 1st or 2nd  to the Yorkshire stages as both teams had won both games. I think this brought a few nerves to the Sirius West side as they struggled to look after the ball and found themselves 2 – 0 down early on. Great response from the dangerous Brooke Williamson brought the score back to 2 – 1. But more knock ons and running into touch from the Sirius side meant that they needed to defend more than they attacked and paid the price as a couple of the big, strong Archbishop girls powered through to make it 4 – 1. Credit to Sirius they had the last word as Keisha Allett outpaced their defence and go over in the late stages to make it 4  -2.

Please congratulate the following girls on their outstanding performance, attitude and behaviour:-
