Year 7 Girls Rugby League team crowned Champions of Hull
Year 7 Sirius Academy West Girls win the Hull Schools RL Competition
The Year 7 Sirius Academy West girls won all three games in the Hull Schools Rugby League competition, which will now see them progress onto the Yorkshire Finals on 29th February.
Sirius Academy West 3 Sirius Academy North 1
Sirius Academy West did not start the game well as they knocked the ball on in their first three sets of six. This gave Sirius Academy North some good opportunities going forward as they worked their way down the field and got a well-deserved first try of the game. Sirius West knew they needed to keep the ball for the full set of six if they were to have any chance of getting back into the game, and they did just that, from the restart a good break from Lucy Sainty put the Sirius West team near the North tryline, and Rachel Robinson was quick to react from acting half back as she spotted a gap out wide to level the scores. Just before the halftime break a loose ball from North was picked up by Jessica Taylor, who managed to sprint the full length of the field to score in the corner. The second half was evenly matched, with both defences looking strong. Alyx Worth and Georgia Coggin were attacking with pace as Sirius West grew in confidence. Bethany Robinson-Key sealed the victory with a good strong run down the middle of the park, the scoreline remained 3 – 1 till the final whistle.
Sirius Academy West 6 Archbishop Sentamu 2
Sirius West had really got into their stride now and started this game with real urgency as Lucy Sainty showed her strength and pace to burst through the defence for the opening try. Sainty continued to cause the Archibishop Sentamu defence problems as she got two more tries to make the scoreline 3 – 0 early in the game. Credit to Archie, they did not throw the towel in and managed to get a couple of tries back of their own to set for a tense second half. Some good tackles from Abbie Brennan, Caitlin Reed and Chelsea Anderson kept Archie from scoring anymore tries, with some solid defence. Bethany Robinson-Key was coming more into the game and looking dangerous as she went over for a couple of good individual tries before Alyx Worth rounded off the scoring to make the final score 6 – 2. Unfortunately, the great team performance came at a price, as danger player Lucy Sainty had to leave the field of play towards the end of this game due to a shoulder injury.
Sirius Academy West 5 St Marys 4
Sirius Academy West knew that if they beat St Marys they would be through to the Yorkshire Finals, and this spurred them on to score three quick tries. Captain Georgia Coggin really led by example as she jinxed her way over for the first try. Abbie Brennan was a willing runner and made some great yards forward to make space for Bethany Robinson Key to go over. Jessica Taylor again was alert to a loose ball and scored a full length try. Emma Waller, Kasey Broadhead, Gracie Potter and Lucy Wilson worked hard in the final stages, showing some good defence and looking to take the ball in. But St Marys started to play some good rugby and got the scoreline back to 3 – 2. Rachel Roberts extended the lead and capped off a fine performance with another try of her own, but again St Marys kept coming at the Sirius West team to make it 4 – 3, cool headed captain Georgia Coggin made sure there was no way back for St Marys with two minutes remaining, but St Marys got a late consolation try as Sirius West were crowned the Champions of Hull.
