Year 7 Girls Rugby
The Year 7 Girls played in their first rugby competition for Sirius Academy West and did not disappoint in an outstanding team performance which saw them come 2nd overall and win a place in the Yorkshire Finals in March.
Sirius Academy West 3 Sirius Academy North 1
First up for Sirius Academy West was the derby match against North. Sirius West looked dangerous from the start with a powerful run by Ruby Ellis and a great offload to the supporting Macey Mickelham who raced over. Sienna Longley scored an outstanding individual try shortly after, before Ruby Ellis showed her power by brushing off many defenders as she scored the third try. Sirius North scored a late consolation try to make it 3 – 1 at the final whistle.
Sirius Academy West 2 Archibishop Sentamu “A” 4
Sirius made a great start against Archbishop Sentamu “A” side with a solo try from Ruby Bennett who showed her pace and skill to go over at the corner. Archbishop responded with a try of their own as they struggled to defend against one of their strong fast players. Sienna Longley once again supported well and the offload from Ruby Jackson gave her a free run to the line to make it 2- 1. From then on the Sirius passing was not great as they threw away the ball on three occasions with Archbishop pouncing on the loose ball and going over to win the game 4 – 2.
Sirius Academy West 5 Archbishop Sentamu “B” 1
Sirius got back to winning ways with a convincing win over Archbishop Sentamu “B”. Ruby Ellis lead the way with two early tries. The rugby the Sirius side was playing was incredible as the offloads and backing up to support the player was outstanding. Hooker Phoebe Marris was next on the scoresheet when she saw a gap and scooted over. Sienna Longley and Ruby Bennett rounded off the scoring.
With the second round of games next up, Sirius West narrowly beat the improving Sirius North 2 – 1 with tries from Ruby Ellis and Lexy Simpson. Sirius needed to beat Archbishop Sentamu “A” to take top spot in the league, and nearly managed to do that as they took an early lead which was the try of the tournament, a precision grubber kick from Ruby Ellis saw the speedy Ruby Bennett chase it and dive on the ball over the try line. Sirius managed to hang on for the majority of the game, but once again two stray passes late on resulted in Archbishop picking up the ball and going over to two easy tries as Sirius lost the game 2 – 1. They bounced back in style though with another convincing win against Archbishop Sentamu “B”, tries from Ruby Jackson, Ruby Ellis (2), Ruby Bennett and Sienna Longley.
Please congratulate the girls on coming 2nd in the tournament and for their outstanding attacking rugby:-
