The Year 7 Sirius Academy West Girls played in their first Yorkshire Rugby League Competition and were drawn in a very tough league of 4 teams, which consisted of Castleford Academy and St John Fisher, who are known for having National Winning sides at all age groups.
Castleford Academy 12 Sirius Academy West 0
Sirius didnt get off to the best of starts, when a knock on at the second tackle gave Castleford the chance to attack. Their big, strong, fast forward ran the ball straight through the Sirius defence to go in for an easy try. Sirius had some good plays in attack, but the Castleford defence was looking strong and there was no way through. Castleford got the ball back and ran nearly the full length of the pitch, when their player went round the outside and there was no stopping her. A tough start for the Sirius side and they went down 12 – 0 in the first game.
St John Fisher 16 Sirius Academy 0
Things were not about to get any easier for the Sirius West team as they came up against another good side in St John Fisher. A knock on from Sirius once again gave St John Fisher some good field position and they went over on their first play. The mistakes kept coming for the Sirius side as they struggled to complete a set of six in the wet, muddy and cold conditions. St John Fisher went over for two more unanswered tries to make the final score 16 – 0.
Sirius Academy 18 Cockburn 0
After some tackling technique work was done in the break, Sirius knew that they could get the better of Cockburn, who had also struggled in their two previous games. It wasnt long before Sirius got over for their first try of the tournament, the powerful Rugby Ellis crashed over from close range and converted her try 6 – 0. The running from Ruby Jackson, Macey Mickelham, Ruby Bennett and Lola Taylor got Sirius in some good field position, and on the last tackle some smart play from Ruby Ellis saw her offload in the tackle to the supporting Sienna Longley who dived over. The try was converted by Ruby Ellis to make it 12 – 0. The defence of the Sirius side was a lot better as they looked more aggressive in the tackle and worked as a team. The victory was sealed with a late try from the impressive Ruby Ellis, as she ran nearly the full length of the pitch to go in under the sticks, Ruby Bennett converted to make the final score 18 – 0.
A lot of the girls today were making their rugby debut and did extremely well, learning with each training session and game. Each player improved throughout the tournament and winning the last game gave them great confidence as a team.
Please congratulate the girls on their attitude and efforts in some very tough games of rugby.
