Year 7 progress to Yorkshire Cup Quarter-Finals!

[07 Feb 2013]

The Sirius Academy Year 7 Rugby team moved into the Carnegie Champion Schools Yorkshire Cup Quarter-Finals after battling to a tough 14-10 victory over a talented Outwood Grange (Wakefield). The match played in windy conditions proved to be a test of who took their chances, and this proved to be Sirius who now are within one victory of qualifying for the National Cup stages.

The match started with Sirius on the back-foot, with Outwood taking advantage to take an early 6-0 lead. Back came Sirius who worked their way into the game with forwards Jack Arnett, Keane Stevenson and Tyler Hackett making good yards forward. With Outwood carrying the ball strongly, Jack Scottow, Dylan Hepworth, Jordan Wornor and Joseph Sedman defended well to bring down the bigger Outwood forwards. A moment of brilliance from captain Mikey Lewis who stepped through from 40 metres out and rounded the full-back to pull Sirius back to 6-4. Sirius continued to work hard with Luke Moss dangerous from the back, and Kieran Bartlett distributing well in difficult conditions to willing runners including the excellent Declan Jackson. On the stroke of half-time a break from Connor Matthews paved the way for Lewis to barge over for his 2nd try, with Stevenson goaling for a 10-6 lead.

The 2nd half saw Sirius camped in their own half for the early stages, with good all round defence led by Jackson and the impressive Reece Gooch keeping them in-front. Outwide Callum Riley impressed taking the ball forward, and Rhys Purchon made good yards up the middle. Outwood made possession count and hit back to level the scores at 10-10 with ten minutes left. Sirius refused to panic, and finally gained field possession with Lewis Harold controlling the ball off the floor. With three minutes left, Lewis and Matthews combined to ship the ball wide for Stevenson to barge over for the winning try, and a 14-10 score-line.

Special thanks to Rachel Gay for her support with the team.

Please congratulate the folliwng boys on their success, attitude and behaviour:
