Year 7 Rugby team remain unbeaten
The Sirius Academy Year 7 Rugby team remained unbeaten going into their final group game after battling to a 6 all draw away at Kelvin last night. In windy and wet conditions the boys should be commended for their handling and willingness to play attacking rugby.
The match started with Sirius on the attack, and it would remain this way for the majority of the 1st half. With strong runs forward from Ali Alsherife, Joe Grant and Leon Stewart, this created space for Joey Barrett and Lewis Wilson to get the ball out wide to Tom Wilkinson who bulldozed over 4 players to touch down. Wilson converted for a 6 nil lead. This appeared to wake up Kelvin whose props began to take the ball up enthusiastically. A bit of hesitancy in the Sirius defensive line allowed them to make good yards but outstanding scrambling defence meant Sirius went into half time with a 6 point lead.
The second half was a different matter altogether and Sirius struggled to get out of their own half. With 15 minutes to go Kelvins left centre charged 70 metres downfield to score under the posts, with the conversion levelling the scores. Sam Macauley and Joey Barrett got Sirius close to the Kelvin line for the chance to retake the lead but unfortunately good defence from Kelvin prevented a winning try.
The most pleasing thing for the coaches was the efforts of the boys new to rugby like Ali Alsherife, Leon Stewart, Aiden Staves and Harry Blackham.
The final group game is against Thomas Ferens next Wednesday on the Sirius field. It would be fantastic for the boys to see some of you there.
Special thanks to Janice Hall for her support driving the bus and Rachel for her input into the match.
