Year 7 Rugby team start with a good win!

[03 Oct 2014]

The Sirius Academy Year 7 Rugby team started their school career with a comprehensive 38-0 win over Trinity House. The team with several players playing their 1st ever Rugby match, scored seven excellent tries and showed plenty of promise as they hope to gain qualification for the Carnegie Champion Schools Yorkshire Cup phases. Next up for the boys they face Kelvin Hall on Tuesday.

Please congratulate the following boys on their success, attitude and behaviour:

The match started with Sirius on the attack, and it would remain this way for the majority of the 1st half. With strong runs forward from Lewis Walker and Alex Dunne, this created space for Joey Barrett and Lewis Wilson to utilise their forwards out-wide with Tom Wilkinson and Connor Foster making good yards. The first try was off a cross-field kick from Wilson which bounced and fell to Wilkinson who crashed over for Wilson to convert for 6-0. Next up was a superb try as Barrett combined to put the impressive Joe Grant in space who passed on to Wilson to sprint clear from 50 yards to score under the posts for 12-0. Sam McCauley was controlling play well around the play the ball, with Harry Blackham using his excellent footwork to make many good yards forward when returning kicks. Forwards Luke Taylor, Ali Alsherife and Ellis Hunter continued the charges forward which were followed by Wilkinsons 2nd try for 16-0.

The 2nd half was much of the same with Leon Stewart and Harrison Gibson getting their hands on the ball and causing problems, supported by Kristian McMahon and Kieron Simpson. Sam Smith moved into the middle with his speed making him good yards with every run forward with Aidan Staves making several outstanding tackles. Barrett was next over showing clever footwork to dance his way over before quick hands sent Wilson over for his 2nd try. Next up was the try of the match as Blackham caught a ball under his own posts before evading defenders before sprinting the full length of the pitch to score an amazing try. The final try of the match went to Simpson who found a gap in the line before crashing through a would be tackle for a well-deserved first ever try.
