Year 7 team compete well in 1st taste of Rugby Union!
The Year 7 Rugby Union team played their 1st competitive match of Rugby Union on Tuesday evening and had some excellent success despite their lack of experience. The team consisting of fifteen Year 7 students, 10 of which had never played the sport, won two of their three matches to finish a respectable 3rd out of the 6 entered teams, whilst scoring 8 tries and only conceding 1 throughout the competition.
The first match saw the boy’s face Kelvin Hall, with the quick hands and speed of the Sirius team proving to much for their opponents. The team managed to score an impressive 40 points in a 14 minute match, with tries coming from Jack Hassard x2, Will Beaumont, Taylor Eastwood x2 and Harrison Bark with Lennon Milner converting 5 drop-kicks.
The 2nd match which was a play-off for a place in the Final saw Sirius come up against Trinity House. The Trinity boys used their greater experience to keep the ball off the Sirius team, who tried hard to retain the ball and win scrums but couldn’t quite find a try. A Trinity try saw them win the match with a solitary try to take a 5-0 win.
The Sirius team then faced St Marys College in the 3rd/4th placed play-off. The team who had now got to grips with the technical aspects of the game scored two tries through Hassard and Easwtood with Joe-Michael Laden converting one drop-kick for a 12-0 win.
Player of the tournament for Sirius went to Jack Hassard.
Special thanks to Mr Wilson for his support with coaching the team, this was greatly appreciated and to Janice Hall for driving the bus and supporting the boys.
