Year 8 Football boys win a thriller with Malet!

[04 Nov 2016]

The Year 8 Football boys showed a determination that they have rarely been called upon to show as they battled their way to a 2-1 win over a very good Malet Lambert team. The Sirius boys who have scored over 20 goals in the their two matches so far this season, had to dig deep and battle for every opportunity in a repeat of last seasons Hull Schools Cup Final. The match tonight was of extra significance as it was a “triple-header” with the winners progressing through to the ESFA Playstation Schools Cup 4th Round, the ESFA Open Schools National Cup 2nd Round and there was also 3 Hull Schools Premier League points at stake.

Sirius started the game with a clear formation which was very effective as the impressive Jack Mortimer excelled in the holding midfielder role, constantly breaking up Malet attacks, allowing Harry Wallis the freedom to start the Sirius move forward. At the back Josh Smith and Hassan Alsherife formed a new partnership in the absence of captain Tom Overton, and they along with the full-backs of Carrington Walker and Ben Spencer were solid against the pacey Malet forwards. Jack Eland in his first game for the team since early in Year 7 worked tirelessly down the left with Pacey Bradley, a last minute inclusion on the right showing nice touches. Mortimer deservedly put Sirius ahead with a curling finish into the top corner from 20 yards. George Petty was as assured as ever with his control at the back setting the tone for a strong defensive display, however he unfortunately couldn’t do anything about the equaliser as the Malet forward fired the ball into the top corner for 1-1 at half-time.

The 2nd half saw fresh legs in Daniel Chadwick down the right put the pressure back onto Malet as Harry Fenton and Alfie Sumpton up top beginning to show some nice touches as the Malet defence struggled to keep the Sirius attacks at bay. It was Chadwick who created the winner as he skipped past his defender and crossed the ball, with Eland latching onto the end of the cross and calmly slotting the ball home for 2-1. Lewis Sutton came on to add extra numbers to a tiring defence and some timely tackles prevented any last minute drama as Sirius held on for a 2-1 win!!

Please congratulate the following boys on their success, attitude and behaviour:

George Petty, Carrington Walker, Hassan Alsherife, Josh Smith, Ben Spencer, Jack Eland, Jack Mortimer, Harry Wallis, Pacey Bradley, Harry Fenton, Alfie Sumpton, Lewis Sutton, Daniel Chadwick.
