Year 8 Football team defeat Hull Champions!
The Year 8 Football team produced a committed display to beat last season’s Hull Champions and the team that beat them 7-2 in the Hull Schools Cup last season, Winifred Holtby. In cold conditions the boys worked hard, and stayed with a structure that saw them take a 4-3 victory and could have possibly been a wider winning margin. The boys now progress to the Humberside Schools Cup Quarter-Final, against Cleethorpes Academy.
The game started well for Sirius with Ewan Malton having two early chances before Chris Brown’s through ball, was followed on by captain Luke Salas who poked the ball home for 1-0 Sirius. Sirius continued to pressure the Holtby side, but when called upon Kieran Bartlett produced saves and the back four of Robbie Hird, Callum Magee, Jordan Wardell and debutant Tom Greenham stood strong. A good corner kick from Lukas Mikoliunas caused problems for the Holtby defence before Brown crashed home for a 2-0 half-time lead for Sirius.
Early in the 2nd half Salas curled a superb shot from the edge of the box into the top corner to give Sirius a 3-0 lead. However back came Holtby to show their class with three quick goals, to level the match at 3-3, and perhaps many thought they would go onto win. However the hard-working Joseph Wood followed up a good save from the keeper to send the ball home to put Sirius 4-3 up which would prove to be the winning score.
Many thanks to Cosi Basile for driving the mini-bus and supporting the boys.
Please congratulate the boys on their performance and attitude:
Kieran Bartlett, Jordan Wardell, Robbie Hird, Callum Magee, Tom Greenham, Kenan Stephenson, Luke Salas, Chris Brown, Ewan Malton, Joseph Wood, Lukas Mikoliunas, Will Murphy, Oliver Russell, Luke Collingwood.
