Year 8 Football team move into Hull Schools Cup Semi-Finals!

[21 Mar 2012]

The Sirius Academy Year 8 Football team moved into the Hull Schools Cup Semi-Final tonight with a hard-fought win over a game Sydney Smith side. The boys played well in parts of the match, and eventually pulled away from the opposition, and kept alive their goal of reaching two Finals, after their success in recently reaching the Humberside Schools Final.

The game started slowly for Sirius with Smith pushing deep passes behind the Sirius defence and causing trouble, and 1 such pass led to the lively forward putting Smith 1-0 up with a neat finish. Sirius began to settle into the match and use the ball wisely with Luke Salas distributing well and full-back Jordan Littlefair and Jordan Wardell giving options on both sides. Sirius pulled level when a Salas corner was headed home by goal-poacher supreme Will Murphy, who was on hand 3 minutes later to stab the ball home to put Sirius 2-1 up. Credit to Smith who immediately came back to level the scores at 2-2, and could have moved ahead however two smart stops from Kieran Bartlett kept the scores level. On the stroke of half-time Oliver Russell blasted the ball home from the edge of the box to give Sirius a 3-2 half-time lead.

The 2nd half saw Sirius up the tempo and skill of their play, and Kenan Stephenson and Ewan Malton caused endless problems for the Smith defence. With Robbie Hird and Callum Magee dealing with threats, this allowed Salas to push on and create space ahead, and 1 such attack saw Murphy claim his hat-trick with another well taken header. Salas then strode through the Smith defence and finished well to put Sirius 5-2 up and the game was done. Despite Smith pulling a goal back, Sirius never looked in danger, and Salas added three more goals to take his match tally to four, before Lukas Mikoliunas added the last minute strike to leave Sirius 9-3 winners.

Special thanks to Danny Rouse and Simon Jewitt for their support and input with the team.

Please congratulate the following boys on their success, attitude and behaviour:

Kieran Bartlett, Jordan Wardell, Robbie Hird, Callum Magee, Jordan Littlefair, Kenan Stephenson, Luke Salas, Will Murphy, Oliver Russell, Luke Collingwood, Lukas Mikoliunas, Jacob Horner, Tom Spurgeon, Ewan Malton.
