Year 8 Girls – East Riding Rugby Union Champions

[12 Mar 2014]

Carrying on from last year’s success at rugby as Year 7’s, the Year 8 girls tried their hand at Rugby Union, and were just as successful in their first competitive competition, coming top of the league and then convincingly winning in the final.

Sirius Academy 9 Headlands ‘B’ 1
Sirius Academy proved too strong for the Headlands B team, running in 9 tries to 1. In a seven a sided competition, the game played for 15 minutes right though, which meant the squad of 14 Sirius girls all got a good run out. In defence they looked solid and in attack they looked dangerous. Ellie Cone was first over the line by outpacing the defence, Kayleigh Waller powered over for two tries in quick succession, after that it was a try everytime Sirius touched the ball, with tries from Mia Duke, Molly Bigby, Saffron Jones (2), Rio Cambell and Jamie Watson in a good team performance.

Sirius Academy 7 Wolfreton 0
In another one sided match Sirius were just unstoppable. Mia Duke scored a hat-trick of tries in the first few minutes, before Molly Bigby went over for a good solo try and Victoria Godwin going over for a couple. Ellie Cone rounded off the scoring. The defence was outstanding on the Sirius team, with Jess Delph, Georga Wardell, Danielle Fulton, Laura Roper and Emily Andrew making some superb tackles.

This meant that Sirius was through to the final against Headlands A, who had also topped their group, seeing off Kelvin Hall and St Marys.

Sirius 7 Headlands ‘A’ 0
Sirius really turned on the style in the final, and as they got to understand the rules more they played some really good rugby, and coupled with an aggressive defence, it was always going to be a Sirius victory. Amelia Longden, who had been superb in the two previous games went over first for a well deserved try, Kayliegh Waller got over for a couple next, no one was going to stop her once she got in her stride. Victoria Godwin finished off a great Sirius passing move to go over for a well worked try, then it was Mia Duke (2) and Saffron Jones who completed the 7 – 0 win, making Sirius Academy the East Riding Rugby Union Champions. This means that they travel will to Wetherby on Friday 4th April to play in the Yorkshire Finals, and if they play like they did today they have every opportunity of making it to Twickenham in May, which would be a fantastic achievement.

Please congratulate the squad on their success, attitude and behaviour.
Mia Duke, Kayleigh Waller, Ellie Cone, Laura Roper, Amelia Longden, Georgia Wardell, Jess Delph, Jamie Watson, Rio Cambell, Saffron Jones, Victoria Godwin, MollyBigby, Emily Andrew and Danielle Fulton
