We travelled to the Bonus Arena for the Year 8/9 Girls 5 a-Side Football Tournament with a very strong year 8 team. The team included Mia Duke, Molly Bigby, Ellie Cone, Ellie Smirk and Emily Andrew. This meant with just five players and no subs it was going to be a very difficult evening for the girls.
As there were only four teams there, each game was played for 20 minutes, 10 minutes each way.
Our first game started with our main rivals St Marys, and what a first game it was. It was an intense first game and some great football was being played from both sides and St Marys looked threatening but our goalkeeper for that game, Bigby, pulled off some great saves to keep us in it.
However the attacking threat of Smirk and Cone saw us win the game 5-4.
Goals: Cone (2) Smirk (3)
Our next game saw us up against Andrew Marvell and with a lot of our energy already being used up in the first match, up stepped the ever industrious Duke. Mia didn’t stop running all game and ended up being the difference scoring twice with a couple of cracking strikes which left the keeper helpless. And up stepped Cone once again with her trusty right foot to slot one in to just to make the game safe. Winning this game 3-1.
Goals: Duke (2) Cone (1)
Our final game left us needing a draw or a win to make the tournament safe. Facing up against a strong Newland team and this time it was the defensive partnership of Bigby and Andrew that made it easy for us. Andrew marked Newland’s most attacking player out of the game, and in doing so left Duke, Smirk and Cone to do what they do best score goals! We won the game comfortably 6-2.
Goals: Smirk (2) Cone (2) Duke(2)
Please say a big well done to the ‘CHAMPIONS’ if you see them around the academy.
