Sirius Academy West Year 8 Girls Rugby League team crowned Hull Schools Champions

In probably the most competitive girls rugby league competition I have seen in a long time, the Sirius Academy West girls managed to win all 4 of their games and be crowned Hull Schools Champions, against some very tough opposition.

Sirius Academy West 5 St Marys  College 1

Elise Hill set the scene nice and early with her powerful run which saw her break through the St Marys defence and go over for an early score. Zeina Hassoum was next on the scoresheet with some great support play to make it 2 – 0. A try saving tackle from Megan Britton kept St Marys out as Sirius went over for another try of their own to extend the lead even further, this time it was the elusive Enola Aitcheson who saw a gap and stepped through it. St Marys were a strong powerful side and managed to crash over. Sirius responded well through Jasmine Fielder who scooted from acting half back showing great vision and execution. Megan Britton made it 5 – 1 with a fine try in the corner.

Sirius Academy West 5 Archbishop Sentamu 2

The first try of the game went to Sirius, after Zeina Hassoum made a superb run forward, she was caught just short of the line, but her offload to Jasmine Fielder was outstanding as the captain went over for an early score. Archbishop went over to equalise. Sirius got their lead back after Enola Aitcheson went over. Archbishop once again equalised, but from them on in it was all Sirius with tries from the powerful Elise Hill, Year 7 Ruby Ellis and and another from Jasmine Fielder to make the final score 5 – 2.

Sirius Academy West 5 Sirius Academy North 2

Once again Elise Hill ran the ball strong and hard which the North side couldn’t handle as she went over on her first run. Winger Paige Walker showed her agility and speed as she stepped her way through and sprinted over 30 yards to make it 2- 0. Sirius North powered over from close range to close the gap but Enola Aitcheson, Zeina Hassoum and Elise Hill had other ideas as they went over for three tries in quick succession. Sirius North had the final say with a well worked try on the final whistle, but the game was already won, final score 5 – 2.

Sirius Academy West 3 Kelvin Hall 1

As the girls started to tire, the final game was against a very fast Kelvin Hall side. Some great defence from Maddie O Connor and Amber Leake kept Kelvin out for two sets of six. The resulting handover saw the impressive Elise Hill break through and run over 50 yards to score the try. Kelvin showed their speed with a good try to equalise, but the Sirius side had too much for them as they went over to seal the victory and be crowned champions as Elise Hill and Enola Aitcheson rounded off the scoring to make it 3 – 1.

I am extremely proud of all the players, they worked extremely hard as a team and got their rewards, lead by an outstanding captain in Jasmine Fielder.

Please congratulate this very talented, tough and skilful group of girls, who definitely deserved to win the competition and go through to the Yorkshire Finals to represent Hull in March:-

Jasmine Fielder (captain), Enola Aitcheson, Paige Walker, Zeina Hassoum, Megan Britton, Poppy Travagli, Elise Hill, Amber Leake, Eden Greenwood-Laws, Holly Paige, Libby Manning, Maddie O Connor and Ruby Ellis (Yeear 7).

Special thanks to Miss Bore for her continued to support with the girls rugby.
