The Year 8 Girls only lost one game in the league stages of the Yorkshire Finals by 6 points, but ended up finishing in 3rd place on tries scored in a very evenly matches league with some outstanding rugby on show.
Sirius Academy 12 Brooksbank 10
Sirius didnt start the competition well and found themselves 10 – 0 down after the first five minutes. But once they got into their stride and cut out the errors they started to dominate in possession and managed to get a try back after some great footwork from Year 7 Georgia Coggin who went over in the corner. Levis Lewis kicked the conversion. Sirius forced a knock on by Brooksbank with some great defending from Cody Bramhamand Kalisha Quantac and from the resulting set of six on their line quick thinking from Beth Dixon saw her power over to make the scores level. Levis Lewis kicked the conversion to win the game for Sirius.
Sirius Academy 10 Cockburn 4
Sirius had grown in confidence from their last game and started much better, with some excellent defence to keep Cockburn out for their first set of six. Millie Jordan was showing great vision from the acting half back position and spotted a gap that she scooted into to score the opener. Shortly after Beth Dixon again showed great determination and strength to get over the tryline after Tilly Lee, Tegan Lawler and Rachel Fox had put Sirius into some good field position. Cockburn went over in the last play of the game to make the scoreline 10 – 4 in favour to Sirius Academy.
Sirius Academy 6 Outwood Grange 12
Next up for Sirius was the impressive Outwood Grange, who had also won their first two matches. Outwood had some strong powerful players and proved too much for Sirius in the early stages as they went over for an early try, but Sirius were showing great desire to get themselves back in the game. Lydia Walker and Levis Lewis showed great defence when they tackled together to get the Outwood player in touch. This gave Sirius a set of six near the Outwood tryline and they capitalised on this, again Millie Jordan was outstanding from acting half back and put Beth Dixon into a gap for her to go over and level the scores. After a string of mistakes from the Sirius side on their first tackle in the next three sets of six, they found themselves defending on their own tryline, and Outwood were too strong to keep out and managed to go over to win the match.
Sirius Academy 22 Huntington 0
Sirius had been told that there were three teams on the same points and it was going to come down to tries scored to see which two would go through. Sirius showed great urgency and skill to ensure they got over the tryline and did not concede. Captain Beth Dixon scored the opener before Georgia Coggin showed pace and footwork to go over for a great individual try. The impressive Millie Jordan was next over after another great scoot from acting half back. Beth Dixon rounded off a superb team performance with another try to see Sirius Academy win their final game comfortably.
Unfortunately the other two teams had scored more tries than Sirius so we lost out on going through to the semi finals on that ruling, which was very disappointing, but the girls have proved that they can compete with some of the best teams in Yorkshire and shown that their improvements from last year has been immense.
Please congratulate the girls in their outstanding performance and behaviour.
