Year 8 Rugby team claim Hull Schools Cup!

[21 Jun 2012]

The Sirius Academy Year 8 Rugby team claimed their 1st trophy in their Sirius careers with a powerful victory over East Hull Champions, Andrew Marvell School, in the Hull Schools Cup Final. The team were dominant from the start, with many outstanding individual performances, and they now look forward to making an impact next year in County and National competitions.

The game began with Sirius defending, with Alex Beaumont and Owen Jones-Barker defying their small size with several telling tackles. Good yards forward by Chris Brown created space for excellent Lochlan Fitzgerald to dummy his way over for a 4-0 Sirius lead. Man of the match Brown was next over, hitting a great line from Fitzgerald to cross with Connah Oliver converting for a 10-0 lead. Sirius continued to press with Brad McLaughlin and Jon Mills making countless yards forward, and the ever dangerous James Ducker refusing to take a backwards step. When Marvell did force pressure, full-back Callum Magee produced an outstanding tackle to deny the opposition. The introduction of Luke Salas brought Sirius their next two tries, with his power and speed been too much for the defence to handle, and Sirius led 22-0. On the stroke of half-time Magee danced his way through the line to score a deserved try to put Sirius 28-0 up at half-time.

Sirius began the 2nd half in the same fashion, with Tom Greenham and Ray Brown making good yards forward, and Oliver making excellent yards with some well-timed runs off McLaughlin. Wingers Brandon Eastwood and Matty Taylor made good breaks when supplied with the ball, however it was the threat of the Brown and Fitzgerald combination that proved difficult for Marvell to contain. Brown crossed twice in quick succession for his hat-trick, before Fitzgerald raced away from 50 metres before intercepting and racing away from 90 metres for his hat-trick try, Oliver converting two for a 42-0 lead. Credit to Marvell who battled gamely, and were rewarded with a good try by their loose-forward. Kieran Bartlett and Luke Collingwood were introduced to the game and continued the Sirius pressure however fittingly it was Brown and Fitzgerald who crossed again once each, to leave Sirius 54-4 winners.

Special thanks to Janice Hall and Jon Flatman for driving the teams and Tracy Westmorland and Simon Jewitt for supporting / assisting with the team.
