Year 8 Rugby team come up short in National Cup!
The Sirius Academy Year 8 Rugby team came up short against Royal Grammar School (London) in the Quarter-Finals of the Carnegie Champion Schools National Cup. The team produced a display that at times showed how good they can play, with the ball been used well and defence holding strong however at times possession was lost too easily and this led to the opposition taking advantage of good positions. The team now look to add the Hull Schools Cup to the Yorkshire Cup they have already won when they face St Marys College in the Final.
The game started with a Sirius try after a Harry Whittles kick and Keane Stevenson off-load sent Jordan Webb over for 4-0. RGS hit back quickly for a 6-4 lead. Sirius then began to control the game with Whittles and Joseph Coates sending the ball wider with Josh Lomax, George Tyson-Wilson and Kai Thorpe having success on the edges. Josh Atkinson made telling tackles and yards forward, with the excellent Ryan Addinall showing his aggression in defence to stop the strong RGS runners. Next over was Atkinson after good hands found Brett Dorley who off-loaded for Atkinson to score for 8-6. RGS again hit back with a try close to the Sirius line to move 10-8 up. On the stroke of half time a Tyson-Wilson run and off-load allowed Lomax to spin out of a tackle and crash over with a Thorpe goal for a Sirius half-time lead of 14-10.
With the instructions for a 2nd half of completing with the ball, Sirius kept to their expansive style and unfortunately made too many mistakes allowing RGS field possession and with it the points that they needed. Two tries in the 2nd half was enough to put Sirius out with a final score of 22-14 with the boys learning valuable lessons and will no doubt come back stronger from the experience.
Special thanks to Rachel Gay for her support with the team and Jon Flatman for support on the day.
