Year 8 Rugby team lose out in Yorkshire Semi-Final!
The Year 8 Rugby League team fell short in their efforts to reach the Champion Schools Yorkshire Cup Final, after they came up against a physical St Wilfred’s (Wakefield) outfit in the Semi-Final. The team probably showed their opponents to much respect in the opening half of the match, which resulted in them been 18-0 down at half-time. After re-grouping at half-time the boys dug deep and began to match the physicality of the opposition which will give them great confidence as we await the draw for the Carnegie Champions Schools National Cup 1st Round.
The match started well for Sirius with captain Mikey Lewis getting the ball back for the team from the kick-off. Joseph Sedman and Jack Scottow went close but we couldn’t find the try-line. Once St Wilfred’s gained possession it became clear they had 4-5 physically stronger players who the Sirius boys would struggle to deal with. Despite strong efforts from Declan Jackson and Jack Arnett, the bigger St Wilfred’s boys continually broke the Sirius defence to score four 1st half tries for their 18-0 lead, the lead could have been bigger were it not for Luke Moss pulling off 2 tremendous try-saving tackles.
The 2nd half saw the Sirius boys gain huge credit as they battled hard to defend strongly. Led from Harrison Longden, Dylan Hepworth and Matty Wilson, we proved harder to break down. Sirius then began to build pressure with Lewis and Connor Matthews coming into the game, and Year 7 Jack Hassard looking dangerous. Jackson finally got a reward for his hard-work by crashing over for the Sirius try. On the final play of the match St Wilfred’s biggest player scored his hat-trick try to leave Sirius defeated but with credit and confidence from their 2nd half display.
Special thanks to Rachel Gay for her support with the team and Janice Hall for driving and supporting the boys.
