Year 8 Rugby team power into 2nd round!

[20 Nov 2012]

The Sirius Academy Year 8 Rugby team produced a clinical performance in poor weather conditions to ease past Brigshaw High (Leeds) in the Carnegie Champion Schools Yorkshire Cup 1st Round. The team who are looking to go one further then last year when they were beaten in the Final, controlled the ball well in wet and windy weather, and scored some excellent tries to highlight the progress they have made. They now look forward to a 2nd Round tie at home against either St John Fisher (Kirklees) or Bradford Academy.

The match began in superb fashion for Sirius with strong defence from Tom Jordan, Josh Kirby and Kai Thorpe forcing Brigshaw back. With their first possession an excellent George Tyson-Wilson offload created room for Brad Elliott to cross for a 4-0 lead. As the game settled down Liam Waudby and Kieran Sewell produced fine tackles outwide, and Josh Lomax, Jay Kirkland, Jordan Webb and Tyson-Wilson worked hard going forward. Half-backs Harry Whittles and Callum Wilsher combined well throughout and two identical inside passes from Whittles created two quick tries for Elliott to complete his hat-trick, with a Thorpe and Whittles goal apiece leaving Sirius 16-0 up. On half-time Lomax grabbed a deserved try, breaking from half-way and finishing well for a 20-0 half-time lead.

The 2nd half saw strong performances from Ryan Addinall, Lewis Hewitt and Brett Dorley, with Josh Atkinson superb in the full-back role. Two quick tries from Thorpe and Lomax again put Sirius 28-0 up. With Wilsher continuing his probing runs, it was left to Dorley to crash over with a Lomax goal for a solid 34-0 win.

Please congratulate the following boys on their success, attitude and performance:

Jordan Webb, Josh Atkinson, Jay Kirkland, Kieran Sewell, Liam Waudby, Harry Whittles, Callum Wilsher, Tom Jordan, Josh Kirby, Josh Lomax, Brad Elliott, Kai Thorpe, George Tyson-Wilson, Harry Knight, Rowan Foster, Ben Macklin, Ryan Addinnall, Louis Macklin, Lewis Hewitt, Brett Dorley.
