Year 8 Rugby team progress through to the Hull Schools Final!
The Sirius Academy Year 8 Rugby team progressed through to the Hull and East Yorkshire Schools Rugby Final after coming through undefeated in a tough qualifying rally. The team played well enough in patches without hitting their own high standards and they now look forward to a rematch with St Marys College, the team who beat them in the Year 7 Final.
First up for Sirius were South Holderness, a team who contained several good quality players. Forwards Kai Thorpe, Keane Stevenson and Josh Lomax dominated well in the early stages, with Jay Kirkland and Kieran Sewell impressing in defence. Holderness went ahead 4-0 and could have gone further were it not for an excellent try saving tackle from Josh Atkinson. Pressure eventually told and the dangerous Brad Elliott scored two tries with two Harry Whittles goals giving Sirius a tight 12-4 win.
With victory assuring a place in the Semi-Final, Sirius faced off against Wolfreton. With Sirius backing straight up after their previous game and Wolfreton coming in fresh this proved to be a very tough encounter. 0-0 at half time was a fair reflection, with Josh Kirby, Tom Jordan and George Tyson-Wilson working hard in defence. Brett Dorley went close on two occasions, with Atkinson looking dangerous linking into the line. Elliott was again first over with Whittles goaling for 6-0, Wolfreton hit back for 6-6. With little time left Whittles sent Elliott over for his 2nd with a crucial Thorpe goal putting Sirius 12-6 up. Wolfreton did score again but were unfortunate to miss the kick leaving Sirius 12-10 victors.
The Semi-Final saw Sirius up against a much improved Kelvin Hall team. Lomax was first over for Sirius with Whittles goaling for 6-0, before Kelvin hit back for 6-4. Elliott broke from 60 metres out and finished well with Whittles goaling for 12-4. Kelvin hit back for 12-10 before Stevenson grabbed a deserved try with Elliott crossing quickly after for a 22-10 lead. Kelvin crossed again for 22-16 however Whittles put Sirius into the Final when he stepped through the line and added the goal for a 28-16 win.
