Year 8 Rugby team retain League title!

[07 Oct 2011]

The Sirius Academy Year 8 Rugby League team retained the West Hull Schools League Championship that they won in Year 7, with another two exceptional performances in cold, wet, windy conditions tonight at Longcroft! The boys added another two victories to the two they had gained previously to maintain their undefeated record for this year.

The 1st match was against Cottingham High, a match between the only two undefeated teams in the competition. The game started well with Luke Salas causing havoc when racing over for an early try for 4-0 Sirius. Cottingham responded well to score and convert to take a 6-4 lead. The try sparked Sirius into life, with Chris Brown, Jon Mills and James Ducker defending and running strongly. This created the opportunities for the outstanding Owen Jones-Barker to cross, followed by Brown who added two further tries. Superb skill from the ever impressive Kenan Stephenson allowed Salas to add his 2nd with Stephenson converting for a 22-6 victory, and secure top Hull seeding for the Carnegie Champion Schools Yorkshire Cup!

The 2nd match of the evening saw Sirius face Longcroft. Again the boys handled the conditions well with Brad McLaughlin, Sam Ribbit and Kieran Bartlett defending well. In attack the combination of Stephenson, Brown, Joseph Wood and Tom Greenham reaped rewards with Greenham crossing for two early tries, with conversions from Stephenson and Connah Oliver before Longcroft responded to take the score to 12-6 Sirius. Salas then sprinted the length of the pitch with Oliver goaling before Jones-Barker bamboozled the defence twice to cross for two tries, again Oliver converting for a 28-6 Sirius win.

Please congratulate the following boys on their achievements and attitude:

Joseph Wood, Matty Taylor, Jordan Wardell, Tom Greenham, Luke Salas, Kenan Stephenson, Brad McLaughlin, James Ducker, Owen Jones-Barker, Sam Wilde, Jon Mills, Connah Oliver, Chris Brown, Kieran Bartlett, Matty Burgess, Sam Ribbit, Brandon Butcher, Bradley Hunt.
