The Sirius Academy Year 8 Rugby Union team created a piece of Sirius sporting history this afternoon by winning the Academy’s 1st ever competitive Rugby Union match. The match against Howden High was in the RFU Yorkshire Cup Round 1, with the boys competing against a team whose players actually play Rugby Union out-side of school. The Sirius team with the vast majority taking part in their 1st ever Union match produced outstanding Rugby tries to surprise the Howden team who could not cope with the speed and skill of the Sirius boys. Next up for the team in Round 2 is either Pudsey Grammer (Leeds) or South Hunsley (East Riding).
The match started with Sirius losing possession as they struggled to retain the ball after the tackle. Luke Moss at full-back produced several copy-book tackles to halt the big Howden forwards. Once settled with the basics Sirius began to move the ball with pace away from the Howden forwards, with Mikey Lewis spreading the ball well to the outstanding Year 7 student Jack Hassard who broke the line several times. Forwards Matthew Wilson and Harrison Longden began powering into the rucks to protect the ball allowing Connor Matthews and Kieran Bartlett to get the ball out quickly. Lewis created the 1st try with a kick through hacked on by the lightening quick Jack Scottow who scored from distance, Lewis goaling for 7-0. Callum Riley, Reece Gooch and Declan Jackson came to the fore from now, continually getting into the ruck and getting Sirius possession. Quick hands from Matthews and Lewis sent Scottow in again for 14-0. Dylan Hepworth and Tyler Hackett were causing havoc with their aggressive running, which saw Hepworth catch a kick through and sprint clear from 60 metres to give Sirius a 21-0 half-time lead.
The 2nd half saw further Year 7 students in Taylor Eastwood, Harrison Bark, Dylan Booth and Joe-Michael Laden come into the game and create problems for the Howden defence. Joseph Sedman, Charlie Holness and Ronan McMahon used the ball well when fed, but it was Scottow who completed his hat-trick with Hassard breaking and kicking through for him to score for 28-0. Credit to Howden whose pressure told with a crash-over try but Sirius had the final say with Lewis throwing his trademark dummy to cruise over for an excellent 33-5 victory.
Special thanks to Janice Hall for driving the boys and her support!
