Year 8 Tale of two halves!
The Year 8 Sirius football team had a slow start to the game yesterday, but there were flashes of quality play from individuals. Some good running from Connor Morgan-Hanson brightened the first half with dogged grit to win back the ball. Despite valiant efforts by the back four, an individual error meant the Referee had little option but to give a penalty for dragging down the opponent. Kelvin’s striker stepped up and blasted the ball over the crossbar, sparing the Sirius team an early deficit.
Kelvin started the quicker and with a good spell of play and a little fortune with the bounce of the ball, Sirius found themselves 1 – 0 down to a good finish from the Kelvin striker, running onto the loose ball. With Kelvin making things difficult and our boys running into traffic, the game was bitty and this created some errors from both sides. Kane Tock, in goal, gave a great display and command of his area, surging out and collecting the ball on several occasions to deny the on-rushing Kevin offense. Despite this, however, a speculative effort from 20 yards out looped over Kane Tock’s head and made the score 2- 0 to Kelvin.
Sirius, after half time, picked up their game and started to put pressure on the ball with Jack Best and Josh Jarvis busy chasing to win back possession. Dominik Litwinski and Connor Morgan-Hanson were running out on the wings with some excellent play through the Kelvin midfield.
Kelvin began to get sloppy with giving possession away cheaply, which lead to a fantastic through ball being played, by Harry Knight, to the forward running Connor Morgan-Hanson to slot in from close range. 2- 1 Kelvin.
This goal only added fuel to the engines of the Sirius boys and they pressed again to win back possession. Defensively, Adam Kelsey put his head onto many ‘Hoofed’ balls from Kelvin who were running out of ideas in attack. Play was quick from Sirius with some good ‘give and go’s’ to quicken the game, Kelvin wanting to waste time and run down the clock.
11 minutes from time, a good ball into the Kelvin box by Harry Knight, with his second assist of the game, found the ever present Connor Morgan- Hanson to strike home a well-deserved equalizer for Sirius. The game now at 2-2, Sirius looked the more likely to snatch a late winner. In the dying embers of the game Stephen Pougher came on, after being taken off injured, and battled hard to win back the ball on the half way line. A clever ball into the feet of Harry Knight saw him side step the on-rushing Kelvin keeper and the open net awaited the winner. Off-balance and an acute angle meant that Knight narrowly missed the net. Despite the last ditch efforts by the whole team the game finished 2-2.
Connor Morgan-Hanson made man of the match for a great contribution of passing and moving and two excellent finishes.
