Year 9/10 Girls Football

[22 Nov 2013]

The Sirius Academy Year 9/10 Girls football team braved the freezing conditions to compete fantastically in a 7 a side tournament held at St Mary’s College.

Due to unforeseen circumstances the girls only managed to gather a team of six players, nevertheless the girls played their first game against a tough Newland team. With Ebony Hepworth playing both defence and attack, Ebony made some brilliant tackles, great passes and didn’t stop running all evening. Megan Kay playing out of position in goal made some brilliant reflex saves to keep us in it. We found it tough work with only six players and Newland found gaps in our hardworking defence and unfortunately we lost 2-0.

2nd match against Malet Lambert was only going to get tougher but the resilience of Esther and Megan Whittles kept the scores even. Megan Kay once again pulling off some heroic saves. In the last few minutes Malet managed to sneak one in at the far post and we lost the game 1-0.

The 3rd game was against the red hot favourites St Mary’s A team and they started off quickly with some sharp passing almost scoring straight away. However our tough Sirius girls managed to compete in every aspect of the game, with some great hold up play and hard work from our lone striker Natasha Frankel. That was backed up by some fantastic running from the ever willing Melissa Tilley in midfield. It was a brave performance but with a player down, it was a difficult ask and St Mary’s ended up winning the game 2-0.

I feel confident that, will a full squad of players at the next tournament we will turn those losses into wins.

Please praise all the girls involved for their commitment, hard work, and fantastic energy on a cold Thursday evening.
