Year 9/10 girls Rugby union
After last week’s fantastic performance from the year 8 team the year 9/10 rugby girls had a lot to live up to in their first ever rugby union matches. The girls had one training session on the rules of 10-a-side rugby union, but took to it immediately in a Hull Schools Competition. The girls were up against some tough competition from 2 St. Mary’s teams, Wolfreton and Kelvin Hall (Last year’s winners).
Sirius 4 v kelvin Hall 0
The girls were nervous about their first match, against a team who had made it to Twickenham last year. After a sloppy start which saw Kelvin gaining a lot of ground, Sirius managed to turn the ball over and were unstoppable in attack with some great passing which saw Megan Kay sore the first try of the tournament. Jordan Shakespeare and Jourdan putting in some excellent tackles. Ebony was solid in defence and was straight up on the Kelvin players causing them to panic and lose the ball which Ebony successfully picked up and ran half the length on the pitch with to score the second try. The match was finished off with Carla using her height to win a Kelvin line out where the team shipped the ball out for Jourdan to score. Jordan Shakespeare finished the game off in style, running through the Kelvin defence and stepping a number of players to score a fantastic try.
Sirius 3 V St Marys A 0
With a strong looking St Marys team the Sirius girls were keen to show them they were ready for their second win. The game started off well with a try from Esther within the first few minutes which saw her breaking through their defence with some strong running. Shauna picked up the ball from the scrum a few minutes later after some excellent attack from the girls to score the second try of the game. Tackles were excellent with Chloe, Demi and Carla bringing down the St Mary’s players and winning the ball numerous times. An excellent steal from Ebony saw the ball turned over and with a little pop to Jordan S saw Sirius make up a lot of ground with Esther getting the 3rd try. Excellent tackles in defence from Olivia, Megan and Jodie.
Wolfreton 0 V Sirius 5
With both Sirius and Wolfreton winning all of their games, the girls were ready to finish the competition off in style. From the whistle the girls were ready with some strong tackles being put in straight away from Carla, Olivia and Jourdan. With a strong defence from the girls the ball was intercepted by Ebony and the girls’ skill and determination was shown with excellent hands for Ebony to score the first try. Wolfreton were keen to get back and were testing the girls’ defence with Olivia putting in some strong tackles on the wing to ensure the Wolfreton team were making no ground, with the ball lost and a great pick up and try from Jordan S the girls were leading 2-0. A few minor errors from Wolfreton leads to Shauna latching on to a loose ball and scoring a great try. Shortly after the Wolfreton kick off Megan Kay picks up a dropped ball and scored a terrific solo try. Within the last 30 seconds a great run by Sirius sees Esther score the final try with a fantastic steal and great speed.
Please congratulate the girls on their excellent attitude, behaviour and effort in their first ever rugby union game.
Thanks to Jess Walker and Rachel Gay for their support and help with the girls.
