Year 9 Boys Rugby League: Malet Lambert 18 Sirius Academy West 28
The Sirius Academy West Year 9 Boys made it through to the Yorkshire stages of the competition after beating Malet Lambert 28 – 18 in a play off game.
The game started in the best possible way for Sirius West when the first tackle of the game on the Malet player saw a text book tackle from Alfie Marsden and Harry Norton to force the knock on. From the resulting scrum Jack Mortimer was found out wide and went over to make it 4 – 0.
In the next set of six for Sirius the strong forwards carried the ball down the middle well and then the ball was switched out wide again to the speedy Jack Mortimer who hit a great line and went through the Malet defence and no one could catch him as he went in under the sticks to make it 10 – 0 after a Kieran Welburn conversion. Sirius kept the momentum going in attack and went over again shortly after to extend the lead even further as the powerful Alfie Marsden crashed over from close range after a great ball from the impressive Dillon Norrie, 16 – 0. It was Malets turn to show what they had in attack and although the Sirius defence was strong down the middle, they got caught out on the flanks as Malet went over 16 – 6. Another quick try from Malet before halftime made it 16 – 12 at the break.
Malet got out the blocks quickly in the second half and took the lead for the first time in the match at 18 – 16. The Sirius boys showed great character and desire as they were next over to take the lead back, this time it was Wesley Holmes who showed his power to go over under the sticks 18 -22 to Sirius. Malet had their chance to go over in the later stages of the game but the Sirius defence stood strong, with Harry Norton leading the way. Sirius sealed the game with only a few minutes remaining as Jack Mortimer went the full length of the pitch to go over for his hat-trick and ensure the Sirius side of a place in the Yorkshire Competition.
That’s five wins from five for the ever improving Year 9 Boys rugby team. Please congratulate the boys on their outstanding performance, effort and character:-
