Year 9 Boys Rugby: Sirius Academy West 30 Kelvin Hall 10
The year 9 Boys Rugby team romped to a convincing 30 – 10 victory, and their third straight win in the West Hull Schools Competition, away at Kelvin Hall School on Thursday evening.
The lads were up against it from the start with a depleted 12-man team and under the untested managerial debut duo of Mrs Watson and Mr Sherwood. Luckily for managerial team, the lads attitude and organisation was impeccable and they set the tone for the whole match with a well drilled and high intensity warm up. This attitude carried it’s way throughout the whole match and Sirius got off to a flying start with a well worked try scored by Leo Meiklenham. The team did not look back. Their positive start was cemented through a second try from Keiran Welburn and a conversion by Tyler Leighton giving Sirius a 10 – 0 lead.
Alfie Marsden and Harry Norton made good yardage and Sirius looked the more likely to score next. However, against the run of play a Kelvin Hall player scored an impressive individual try, breaking through the Sirius defensive line with only a couple of minutes remaining until half time. An instant reply from a try by Mason Palmer in the dying seconds of the first half restored a healthy lead just before half-time, 14 – 6 Sirius.
The boys picked up from were they left off to score their third try early in the second half by Harry Norton, who showed great strength and desire to battle his way through two tackles. Tyler Leighton made the conversion and gave Sirius a 20 – 6 lead. Quickly afterwards, Mason scored his second try of the match after constant Sirius pressure.
The best move of the match came from Tyler Leighton who managed to confuse the whole Kelvin defence with not one, but two dummy passes, made all the more impressive given the fact no Sirius player was anywhere near him, before off loading to Alfie Marsden who sprinted 50 yards to the try line. Tylers third conversion cemented the victory and gave Sirius an unassailable 30 – 6 lead. Inevitably, the 12 men of Sirius began to tire, and a lapse of concentration gave Kelvin an opportunity to capitalise and score their second try of the match.
Mrs Watson and Mr Sherwood left extremely impressed and proud of their attitude on and off the pitch.
Please congratulate the boys on their impressive victory.
