Year 9 boys Rugby team crowned Yorkshire Plate champions!

[26 Mar 2015]

The Sirius Academy Year 9 Rugby team capped an excellent cup run by comprehensively winning the Champion Schools Yorkshire Plate competition at Wakefield Wildcats, Rapid Solicitors Stadium. The team who have defeated schools from Wakefield, Huddersfield and Castleford on route to the Final, overcame John Smeaton Academy (Leeds) to lift the trophy. The team now look towards the Hull Schools Cup competition in which they have their Semi-Final in the near future.

The match started brightly for Sirius with a Declan Jackson kick-off been superbly caught by Jack Scottow to set up an immediate attack. Strong drives by the impressive Rhys Purchon and Keane Stevenson laid the platform for a cross-field kick from Connor Matthews to be taken by Stevenson who fed Mikey Lewis who scooted over for an early 4-0 lead. The opposition from Leeds began working their way back into the game and soon levelled the scores with a smart try which isolated some poor inside defence from Sirius. Sirius bounced back with Kieran Bartlett who unfortunately sustained a hand injury shortly afterwards bring forwards Jackson, Tyler Hackett and Jack Arnett into the game. At full-back Luke Moss was as reliable as ever, making excellent yards from kick returns. Arnett and Scottow both went close before Arnett made no mistake with two quick-fire tries with one Lewis goal for a 14-4 half-time lead.

The 2nd half saw Year 8 student, Jack Hassard introduced and he showed great maturity to lead the forwards around from dummy-half. Wide out, Joseph Sedman, Callum Riley and Reece Gooch were solid, making strong tackles when needed. Gooch was next over with quick-thinking for acting-half before Scottow scored the try of the match, been fed by Lewis, he then raced home from 50 metres. Jordan Wornor, Matty Wilson and Harrison Longden made strong impacts in the middle when going forward and the match was finished by Dylan Hepworth who broke through and calmly rounded the full-back allowing Jackson to goal for a 28-4 success.

Special thanks to Cosi Basile and Rachel Gay for their assistance with the team and to Laura Martin for her support.

Please congratulate the following boys on their success, attitude and behaviour:
